Flights to Rome can land at any of the three airports servicing the city. Rome's main airport is the Leonardo da Vinci International Airport also called the Fiumicino Airport, which is 16 miles to the southwest of Rome. One of the busiest airports of Europe, Fiumicino Airport is Alitalia's hub. The second airport that is used for both civilian and military purposes is the Rome Ciampino Airport, and is located 12 miles southeast of Rome. Private flights and helicopters use a third smaller airport that is about 3.5 miles from the city called the Roma-Urbe Airport. Connecting to the historic city of Rome from the main airport is convenient with easy availability of taxis and buses using A91 Roma-Fiumicino motorway.

Rome Weather

Rome has a Mediterranean climate. In the summer, the months from June to September, are dry and hot with temperatures often breaching the 95F (35C) mark. Rome has a comparatively mild winter with temperatures from December to February hovering between 10-15C (50-60F), and heavy rainfall in the months of November and December. The ideal time for flights to Rome is in the spring from March to June. In autumn, September and October, are also good months for taking Rome flights to take advantage of crystal clear skies and lovely weather conditions.

Getting Around Rome

After your flight to Rome, you can get into the city using the public transport system, with buses and trams being more convenient because the metro rail system skips most of the city areas. The major tram, subway and bus services are operated by ATAC, with the main bus station hub being Stazione Termini. Buses run from 5:30 am to midnight, though some routes have restricted services through the night. Rome's radial street design does create traffic problems and the city center or the ring road must be accessed in order to connect from one road to another. Reaching major sites like the Colosseum or St. Peter's Basilica is best done on foot as through traffic is restricted for the most part.
