Place Camille Julian was opened in 1934 in the dense urban fabric of the town centre. It was decided not to subdivide and to rebuild the space left vacant by the destruction of the insalubrious block.
A car park was dug under the square in 1989. Archaeological digs were carried out during the works, providing an insight into the history of urban planning in the area. The square was renovated in 2000 as part of the World Heritage programme, for which the city was designated a World Heritage Site in 2007.
Terraces of cafés and restaurants occupy a certain area of the square.
The Utopia cinema, a former Saint-Siméon church converted into a garage and then a theatre, is located on the square.
