"Sister Act" was the 1992 Golden Globe nominated movie starring Whoppi Goldberg as Deloris Van Cartier. Deloris is a Reno lounge singer and gangster's gun moll who is forced to hide in a nunnery after witnessing a mob killing. To keep her safe, police lieutenant Eddie Souther convinces the Mother Superior of a downtrodden San Francisco convent to take Deloris in, promising she will make a great nun. Nothing could be further from the truth. Deloris gets herself into one mess after another as she struggles to conform to the restrictive environment of a nun's life.
To keep her out of trouble, the Mother Superior, portrayed with bristly perfection by Maggie Smith, puts Deloris in charge of the choir. Under Deloris' direction, the sad little singing group blossoms, and soon, church services at the convent are so popular that the sanctuary is bursting at the seams. Deloris turns the girl-group songs from her lounge singing days into modern hymns of love and devotion to God, and brings new life to the convent as well. Just when we all think Deloris has found her true calling, the mob discovers where she has been hiding. The rest of the movie is a madcap race to keep Deloris out of the hands of the mob long enough for her to testify against her murderous boyfriend at his trial.
