A Steady Rise to the Top

Errol Spence Jr. got his start in boxing at the age of 19 when he competed for and won the U.S. National Golden Gloves title. Over the next three years he would win the National Amateur Welterweight Championships, and then go on to reach the World Championships in 2011 ultimately losing to Serik Sapiyev. In 2012 Errol competed in the London Olympic Games, he however lost in the quarter finals to Andrey Zamkovoy. After losing in the London Olympics, Spence made the decision to take his career professional. In November of 2012 he had his first professional fight against Jonathan Garcia at the Fantasy Springs Casino in Indio, California. With his knockout on Garcia in three rounds it signified the start of a very successful career for Errol. In 2015 he began to become a standout within the boxing community after he knocked out Samuel Vargas at a Premier Boxing Champions Fight at the Barclays Center. Later that year he was recognized as the ESPN prospect of the year. In March of 2016 Errol’s skills were put to the test when he was faced off with the undefeated champion Chris Algieri. At the time his largest fight to date, his knock out win solidified his dominance within the boxing community. Over the course of the next several years, Errol dominated the ring taking down several champions along the way. With his win over Kell Brook in 2017 he had won the IBF welterweight title, a title that he remains the holder of to this day.

Spence vs. Garcia

In the summer of 2018 Mikey Garcia called out Errol Spence Jr. requesting that the two face off in a fight. In the fall of that year the IBF announced that the two would be facing off in a fight within the coming year.
