Starting his musical career as a producer at Ace Records, Rebennack started touring the South as a band member during the 1950s and later moved to California to play backup guitar and piano for superstar musical acts like Sonny and Cher and Frank Zappa. He assumed the stage name of Dr. John in the late '60s, and his first album Gris-Gris was released by Atco Records in 1968. Eventually listed as #143 on Rolling Stone's list of the 500 greatest albums of all time, Gris-Gris showed how influential voodoo culture was on Rebennack's aesthetic.
