About Coldplay

British rock band Coldplay was originally formed in 1996 by lead singer Chris Martin and lead guitarist Johnny Buckland at University College London. At the time, they called themselves Pectoralz until bassist Guy Berryman joined and they changed their name to Starfish. The addition of drummer Will Champion completed the group, and before they began recording in 1998, the name was officially changed to Coldplay. Initial recordings were given to local music magazines, radio stations and family while the band played at a series of London clubs. It was during this time that Coldplay signed with independent record label Fierce Panda and by the early 2000s, Coldplay tickets were selling like crazy.

Coldplay Albums

Coldplay's first album Parachutes debuted in 2000 and the first single "Shiver" did fairly well. But it was their second single "Yellow" that really sent the group to international stardom and success. The band's second album released hits "In My Place", "Clocks" and the ballad "The Scientist", inspired by George Harrison of the Beatles. Later hits include "Viva la Vida", "Speed of Sound" and "Paradise". The British rock sensation has received numerous nominations and accolades throughout their history, most notably more than 30 Grammy nominations over the years. Of those Grammy nods, the group has taken home seven awards. In 2002, Parachutes received the Best Alternative Music Album award, "Clocks" won Record of the Year in 2004 and "Viva la Vida" was named Song of the Year in 2009. Coldplay has also won several World Music Awards, Brit Awards, MTV Video Music Awards and Billboard Music Awards.

The band's discography spans more than a decade and includes Parachutes (2000), A Rush of Blood to the Head (2002), X&Y (2005), Viva la Vida or Death and All His Friends (2008), Mylo Xyloto (2011), Ghost Stories (2014) and A Head Full of Dreams (2015).

Coldplay and Their Audience

Known for their deep, passionate and thought-provoking lyrics, Coldplay has always been about connecting to their audience on an emotional level. Rather than accept corporate endorsements, the band has used their music as a platform for advocacy. An outspoken fair trade advocate, Martin has influenced songs that reflect many global issues, even speaking out as part of Oxfam's Make Fair Trade campaign, which focuses on improving lives by reducing poverty.

Coldplay Breaks Through

Following the release of Viva la Vida, the band toured throughout Europe, North America and Latin America. The band's popularity skyrocketed, making Coldplay tickets hard to find. As one of the most beloved music groups of the new millennium and selling more than 60 million records worldwide, Coldplay reached heightened levels of success. Coldplay's A Head Full of Dreams Tour was legendary with Coldplay tickets being hard to come by at a discount.
