The Milwaukee Brewers have been the beloved Wisconsin major league baseball team since 1970. They were once the Seattle Pilots, who were around for just one season back in 1969, then acquired and brought to Milwaukee in a bankruptcy sale by long-time owner (and baseball commissioner) Bud Selig.
The Brewers have not yet won a World Series yet in their 40+ year history, but there have been a number of thrilling moments and seasons over the years. Most notably, in 1982, they won the American League East Division and the American League Pennant. However, a World Series was not meant to be, and they were defeated by the St. Louis Cardinals in Game 7.
In 2008, the Brewers went to postseason play for the first time in 26 years. They were eliminated in the National League Division Series by the eventual World Series champions, the Philadelphia Phillies.
Then on September 23, 2011, the Milwaukee Brewers clinched their first division title in over 29 years. They defeated the the Arizona Diamondbacks in the National League Division Series in five games,. However, they proceeded to lose to the eventual World Series champion St. Louis Cardinals in six games.
During games, Brewers fans have come to look forward to a lot of fun events, including the Sausage Races. At every game in the bottom of the sixth inning, 7 foot 3 inch foam-costumed sausages take their place at the starting line at third base. Ready... set... go! The sausages proceed to race one another to home plate, and then on to the finish line at first base.
The Sausage races garnered national attention and notoriety during one game in July 2003, when one of the Pittsburgh Pirates team members (Randall Simon) decided to hit Guido the Italian sausage with a bat. While no malice was intended, the top-heavy costume and its wearer Mandy Block fell over immediately, taking the person in the hot dog costume down with her.)
Fortunately, no one was hurt, but Simon was arrested, fined and received a 3 game suspension for his actions. Despite the stiff reprimand, many baseball fans around the country found the whole incident quite comical. Even Mandy Block had Randall Simon autograph the bat he hit her Italian sausage costume with, and some Wisconsin clothing companies went on to make a small fortune by selling T-shirts spoofing the incident.
Wisconsin baseball fans appreciate these entertaining additions to the experience of watching their pro baseball team play.
