About Miami Dolphins vs. New York Jets

The Dolphins Jets rivalry started as early as 1966. It was the year the Miami Dolphins were established. The reason behind this rivalry was simple, both teams are members of the AFL East Division. With the AFL-NFL merger in 1970, both teams were placed in the AFC East Division, ensuring that the two would play at least two regular season games, vying for divisional supremacy. The rivalry has stayed intense despite the New England Patriots ascension in the division and the league in general.

Unlike other typical football rivalries, there is a unique phenomenon associated with the Dolphins– Jets rivalry. A large number of Jets fans have retired in South Florida, ensuring their presence at Hard Rock Stadium, whenever their team is playing an away game in Miami.

Needless to say, the two teams have played a number of classic games,a couple of which are listed below.

Memorable Moments in Dolphins-Jets AFC East Rivalry

The Fake Spike – It was November 27, 1994, and the two teams were fighting for divisional supremacy at the Giants Stadium. But this game would be remembered for one other reason as well, Dan Marino’s fake spike. The first half belonged to the Jets and the second half began with Jets 24-6 on the scoreboard. However, when Jets QB Boomer Esiason threw interceptions, Marino and his offense scored 22 points, which was enough to end the game 28-24. One of the most memorable drives in Dolphins history was part of this game when Marino signaled that he was going to spike the ball. Instead he took the snap and rifled one to Mark Ingram for the go-ahead touchdown.

Monday Night Miracle – One of the greatest comebacks in NFL history occurred on October 23, 2000, at the Giants Stadium. The Dolphins dominated throughout the first three quarters and entered the fourth quarter with a 30-7 lead. The Dolphins had already started to celebrate with the Jets fans ready to leave the stadium. It was premature, as it turned out. Jets QB, Vinny Testaverde threw four touchdown passes in the fourth quarter and the Jets kicker, John Hall added a field goal. The Jets scored 30 points in this quarter alone. However, the game wasn’t done yet, as the Dolphins still had a chance of winning by stopping the Jets on a 4th-and-1 from the 4-yard line. It never happened. Testaverde threw the game-tying touchdown and the game went into OT, where Hall kicked a 40-yard field goal and the Jets won 40-37.
