When the Minnesota Vikings were established in 1961, everyone was expecting a Vikings–Packers rivalry. The signs were all there. The Vikings and the Green Bay Packers were in the same division. Minnesota and Wisconsin are in close proximity to one another, and Minnesota and Wisconsin universities teams have been old rivals in NCAA Division I football.
Therefore, it came as no surprise when the Packers–Vikings rivalry took off in 1961. It is now considered one of the most intense rivalries in the NFL. One of the most interesting features of this rivalry is the many close games and countless memorable moments.
Greatest Moments between the Packers and the Vikings
When the Vikings “Finished” Mike Holmgren – It was October 5, 1998, the Packers were hosting the Vikings at Lambeau Field. It had also been three years since the Packers had lost a single regular season game at home but October 5 would change that. It was the day of the Vikings offense. The day belonged to QB Randall Cunningham and wide receiver, Randy Moss. It took Moss five catches, 190 yards, and two touchdowns to shatter the Packers winning streak. For some Packers fans, it was the beginning of the end of the Holmgren era. For the Vikings fans, it was something straight out of a movie. The final score was Vikings 37-24.
The Improbable Bobble – It was a cold and rainy evening at the Lambeau Field on November 6, 2000. It can be called a messy night in which both teams offenses were pass-happy and neither could move the ball in the rain. Both were tied at 20-20 when the fourth quarter started. The Packers fans almost missed a heartbeat when with seven seconds to play, the Vikings lined up for a 33-yard field goal. Mitch Berger however muffed the snap. The quarter remained scoreless and the game went to OT.
On 3rd-and-4 during Green Bay's first possession, the Vikings pressured Favre into a long lob to Antonio Freeman. As the Vikings corner Chris Dishman whacked the ball out of the air and off of his body, Freeman, face-down on the ground, somehow came up with the ricochet on the fly. Dishman didn't notice that Freeman wasn't down, and Freeman ran into the endzone. The final score was Packers 26-20.
