Simms Loses His Spleen

September 24, 2006 – In the third quarter of the game, Buccaneers quarterback Chris Simms was hit on a two-yard bootleg play. The hit was severe enough that he had to momentarily leave the game, returning after a few minutes. Once he was back on the field and leading a go-ahead field goal drive, he was hit several more times very viciously, which made his condition worse. With seconds left on the clock, the Panthers would ultimately win the game 26-24 thanks to a game winning field goal. After the game, Simms had to be rushed to the hospital because it was found that he had a ruptured spleen and was bleeding internally. Had the injury not been discovered, it could have been fatal for the Buccaneers quarterback.
