The Arizona Diamondbacks are one of 30 franchises in Major League Baseball. Since entering the league in 1998, the Diamondbacks have competed in the NL West Division. Diamondbacks tickets have been a hot property since, unlike many expansion teams, high levels of success have come quickly for Arizona.
The Diamondbacks wasted no time making noise in the MLB. Arizona became the fastest expansion team in MLB history to claim a division title when it earned the NL West crown in just its second season of existence. The acquisition of talented players like pitcher Randy Johnson and outfielder Luis Gonzalez helped the Diamondbacks win 100 games in 1999 and climb from last place to first place.
It set the stage for even greater things just two years later. Behind the pitching tandem of Johnson and Curt Schilling, Arizona claimed its second NL West title in three seasons. Johnson and Schilling finished first or second in virtually every major pitching category. Johnson had 372 strikeouts and won his third consecutive CY Young Award. Schilling accumulated 293 strikeouts in his first full season in Arizona. Gonzalez also ranked as one of the top NL batters with 57 home runs and 142 RBI. He finished third in the NL in both categories.
A division title would only be the beginning in 2001. Fans who bought Arizona Diamondbacks tickets that season got to witness their team win its first playoff series in franchise history when Arizona dispatched the St. Louis Cardinals in the NL Division Series and then beat the Atlanta Braves in the NL Championship Series to reach the World Series for the first time ever.
Arizona faced off against the New York Yankees in the 2001 World Series. The Diamondbacks took a 2-0 series lead and lost three straight to the powerful Yankees. They came back to win game six and force a game seven. Arizona needed a dramatic ninth inning rally in game seven and got it. Trailing 2-1, the Diamondbacks won 3-2 when Gonzalez singles to center and drives in Jay Bell for the winning run. Arizona becomes the fastest expansion team to win a World Series, accomplishing this feat in just its fourth season of existence.
The Diamondbacks would win NL West titles again in 2002, 2007 and 2011. Arizona lost in the NLDS all three seasons. The 2011 title season was notable as it capped a rise from last place to first place for the Diamondbacks.
Johnson later entered the MLB record books during his time with the Diamondbacks. He became the oldest pitcher to pitch a perfect game, accomplishing that feat at age 40 when he threw a perfect game against the Atlanta Braves on May 18, 2004.
In 2010, Gonzalez became the first Arizona player to have his number retired. He played with the Diamondbacks from 1999 to 2006. During that time, Gonzalez became the franchise leader in several batting categories. He accumulated 1,337 hits, 780 runs, 224 home runs and 774 RBI.
