Take a break from Fort Lauderdale to go and explore the many attractions that exotic Santo Domingo has to offer. Once your flight lands at the Las Américas International Airport (SDQ), pick up your rental car and head to Boca Chica; a resort town where you will find white sandy beaches like Bocana, and plenty of restaurants such as Boca Marina or Neptuno’s. You can also travel to the Fortaleza Ozama, a castle built on the Ozama River in the 16th century.
Highway 3 runs along the coast of Santo Domingo to the Colonial Zone, where you can visit the Monasterio de San Francisco, a monastery built in 1508. Then, you can enjoy the shops, restaurants, and nightclubs like Jet Set found in the nearby area. You can also take Highway 2 towards Juan Dolio and the Guayacanes beaches. Take a long walk on the beach under the palm trees, or relax at one of the oceanfront bars and restaurants such as Salitre.
The flight from Fort Lauderdale–Hollywood International Airport (FLL) to Santo Domingo takes about two hours and 20 minutes. Once you arrive, you will need to get a tourist card before going to Customs. Santo Domingo is the capital of the Dominican Republic, one of the oldest countries in the Americas.
