Carrasco International Airport (MVD) is just 40 minutes from the center of vibrant Montevideo, Uruguay. Several all-night cafes, and airport-wide access to free Wi-Fi, complete the welcoming atmosphere created by this airport’s modern, comfortable design. MVD is an urban airport, but it’s also just a short drive from the Atlantic Ocean. Renting a car from MVD gives you full access to the gorgeous Rambla Constanera, that skims the coastline all the way down to Montevideo.
Ciudad de la Costa and Montevideo are the closest cities to MVD, with Montevideo being the most attractive for visitors. Most locals in Montevideo rely on public transportation, so traffic in the city is light, and easy to navigate. If you’re more in the mood for relaxing, Montevideo’s Old City area has an amazing café culture and is a great place to catch live music or entertainment at night. Traveling out of Montevideo, Highway 1 is Uruguay’s main artery for all points north or south on the coast.
Traveling time between John F. Kennedy (JFK) and MVD is approximately 13 1/2 hours. If you’re driving you can be in the middle of Montevideo within an hour of clearing Uruguayan customs. Parking in Montevideo is generally free and unregulated, except in areas with yellow stripes on the pavement. Montevideo’s low crime rate makes leaving your car parked in public a generally safe and worry free experience.
