Milan is known the world over as a design and fashion capital. Guests from the LaGuardia Airport (LGA) fly for eight and a half hours for the pleasure of visiting a diverse number of attractions, such as the Milan Cathedral. Reaching LGA is easy by train, bus or taxi and will save you forking out on parking. Taking 500 years for completion, the cathedral boasts 3,200 statues and 135 towers, and it remains the largest Gothic-styled church on the planet. The Sforza Castle contains the art of Michelangelo, collections of ancient art, musical instruments and artifacts from Egypt.
Fans of classical music attend live performances at La Scala opera house, which also contains a museum. The cross-shaped Gallery of Vittorio Emanuele II houses an array of exquisite bars, restaurants and shops. Beneath the glass roof, the structure also connects the Duomo and the Teatro Alla Scala. Public buses, trolley cars and an underground transit network provide transportation throughout Milan.
From about 400 B.C., Celtic people known as the Insubres inhabited the area. The Romans invaded, conquered the region and transformed Milan into the capital of the Western Roman Empire. By the Middle Ages, the city had grown into an important banking and commercial center. Today, visitors arriving to the Milan Malpensa Airport (MXP) find an immense metropolis with a humid, subtropical climate. Summer temperatures often exceed 90 degrees Fahrenheit, and winter temperature average 28 degrees.
