After traveling from John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK), and arriving at Jorge Chavez Lima Callao International Airport (LIM), visitors will need to travel roughly seven miles in to the historic center of Lima. You can tour the area either on foot or by bike, and you should consider taking advantage of the variety of the guided tours that are available in the area.
Visit the Plaza Mayor where you can watch the changing of the guard Monday through Saturday, or take a tour of the Jiron de la Union. Afterwards, enjoy a hot cup of Peruvian coffee and soak up the atmosphere in the heart of Peru.
Renting a car will give you the freedom needed to visit Peruvian tourist landmarks such as Larcoma, a shopping district, built alongside the cliffs of Miraflores. The area offers visitors a stunning view of the ocean, and provides the perfect mixture of Old World Peruvian shopping, and modern luxuries.
When packing for your visit to Peru, be sure to bring comfortable clothing and good walking shoes because shoes may not be available in your size upon arrival in Peru. It's also recommended that you rent a four-wheel-drive vehicle, such as a Jeep or truck, since you may need to drive over rough terrain. The flight between New York and Lima will likely be close to five hours.
