With their upbeat surf take on the new wave sound, the B-52s became an underground sensation right off the bat. In 1978 their single "Rock Lobster" brought them droves of listeners, and the following year they released their debut album to international success. The B-52s released several hit dance and pop songs, including "Private Idaho" and "Legal Tender." In 1985 lead guitarist Ricky Wilson tragically passed away from AIDS-related health problems, and shortly after the band decided to take a break. They returned in 1989 with Cosmic Thing, which featured two of their biggest hits, "Love Shack" and "Roam." Good Stuff followed in 1992, their last studio album for sixteen years until the release of Funplex in 2008. Funplex was a sensation, packed with rock and roll dance tunes that both listeners and critics loved.
