Symphony X's origin story has its roots in their overseas success. In 1994 Michael Romeo and Michael Pinnella released a record that started to gain an underground following, specifically in Japan. After rounding out the rest of the Symphony X lineup, the band released their debut album. Listeners were drawn by the unique blend of symphonic metal and traditional heavy metal. Their third album, The Divine Wings of Tragedy, broached the European market, and in 1998 the band kicked off touring in Japan. In 2005 they performed at Gigantour, and two years later they launched an epic world tour with stops in Russia, India, and the Middle East. Soon Symphony X was releasing concept albums and crossover hits, like the 2011 record Iconoclast.
