The group started in 1993, when Garrett "G. Love" Dutton and Jeffrey Clemens struck up a friendship in a Boston bar. After adding bassist Jim Prescott to the group, G. Love & Special Sauce released their debut album. "Cold Beverage" became an MTV staple, propelling the band to prominence. In 1995 they released their sophomore album, but internal tensions drove the group to take a hiatus. The members pursued separate projects but reunited in 1997. Their third album, Yeah, It's That Easy, was a unique combination of the band's original music and collaborations with artists like Dr. John, All Fellas Band, and Philly Cartel. In 1999 Philadelphonic became one of their most heralded albums, an entrancing blend of hip hop, funk, psychedelica, blues, and soul. G. Love & Special Sauce prolifically releases music, ingeniously testing the boundaries of their rock R&B sound.
