Born Ned Arnel Mencia in Honduras to a large family with seventeen siblings, Mencia moved to East Los Angeles to live with his aunt and uncle. His childhood was tumultuous, a struggle between focusing on school and temptation to join the gang violence that surrounded him. Carlos Mencia got started in comedy on the local Los Angeles circuit, performing at popular venues like The Laugh Factory, The Comedy Store, and The L.A. Cabaret. In the late 1980s he started performing under the name "Carlos" to draw in Latin audiences. Success at L.A. venues led to television work, and in 2002 Carlos Mencia reached mainstream success on Comedy Central Presents. His partnership with Comedy Central continued in 2005, when he started his own half-hour show. Mind of Mencia was a blend of stand-up and sketch, and it ran for three seasons.
