Dominating in the Big Ten

Hockey has long been a part of Wisconsin culture, but the program at the University of Wisconsin-Madison really kicked off in 1963. The team suffered a humble beginning, though the tide turned when the Badgers won their first ever game against their eternal rival, the Minnesota Golden Gophers. In 1973 Wisconsin skated to the national championship title, a feat they repeated in 1977 with one of their best teams to date. In 1981 the Badgers had an extra sweet victory against their rival Minnesota at the NCAA Championship Game. The program began to slip in the early 2010s, but when the Badgers joined the new Big Ten hockey conference, they claimed the conference championship title. Under the leadership of Coach Tony Granato, a former Red Wings assistant coach, the Badgers are regaining their golden age luster, once again dominating the ice.
