Started in 1892, the future Hokies kicked off their inaugural season with a 14-10 win. Those early years were marked by a budding rivalry with in-state opponent Virginia. In 1947 they made their debut bowl appearance, and in 1954 they had their first undefeated season. In 1981 the team went from being the Gobblers to the Hokies – which may have been good luck, as five years later the Hokies won their first bowl game at the Peach Bowl. The Hokies have made history with the longest bowl appearance streak in the NCAA, started in 1993 with the Independence Bowl. In 2000 they competed for the BCS National Championship title, but they lost to the Florida State Seminoles at the Sugar Bowl. Still, the early 2000s were rewarding for the team and the fans, with four ACC championship titles. Virginia Tech has continued to develop its neighborhood rivalries, making Virginia Tech-Virginia games and Virginia Tech-West Virginia games some of the most anticipated of the season.
