Humble Beginnings
In its early days, the Snake River Stampede was nothing more than a bucking contest in Nampa's harvest festival. It was a roped off area in the present site of the Nampa Post Office, and people just stood around the ropes to view the contest. They broke away from the harvest festival in 1937 and joined the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association under the Snake River Stampede title. A stadium was built for the festival in 1950, which seated 10,000 fans. Cowboy singers like Gene Autry and Rex Aleen were brought out during halftime, but once the era of Cowboy singers died out, country singers like Reba McEntire and Barbara Mandrell led the intermission. Different rode events like barrel racing and bullfighting replaced the singers in 1980. By the year 2000, the festival moved to a brand new indoor stdium built in conjunction with the Ford Idaho Center. Fans now get to enjoy the Buckaroo Breakfast, Rodeo Parade, and Equestrian Drill Team Competition prior to the actual rodeo, to create enthusiasm for the upcoming event.
