Amping up rock music with classical influences

Started by Roy Wood, Jeff Lynne, and Bev Bevan, Electric Light Orchestra was envisioned as a way to fuse classical music and rock to create a thrilling new sound. Their debut album was released in 1971, making them an instant sensation in the UK. ELO's early years were marked by tumultuous lineup changes, with Wood leaving and taking several members with him, but by 1972 Jeff Lynne had assumed leadership and the band made a successful second debut at the Reading Festival. Their fourth album, Eldorado, A Symphony, was their first gold album and further cemented their popularity in the US. The Big Night tour was record breaking, with ELO performing sold out shows. Their popularity reached a fever pitch in 1979 with the album Discovery and the single "Don't Bring Me Down." In 1986 Electric Light Orchestra dissolved, remaining inactive for over a decade. Jeff Lynne recreated the band in 2001 with the album Zoom. While Lynne is the only founding member still performing in ELO, his creative vision continues to drive the band to new places.
