In the seventh-grade Williams met Chad Hugo, a saxophonist at summer band-camp. Although the two went to different schools, they both bonded over their love for music and their involvement in their school’s marching bands. The two would eventually be the founding members of The Neptunes, a “R&B-type” band, with two other friends Shay and Mike. When the quartet played at a high school talent show in the area, they were recognized by Teddy Riley who would later sign them upon graduating from high school.

By the early 2000’s the Neptunes gained the attention of major stars in the industry including Jay-Z, Nelly, and Britney Spears, producing hit singles for both artists. For much of his producer work, Williams would go on to receive Grammy Awards for. In 2005 Williams branched off and started his solo career, releasing In My Mind as his debut album. Over the years Williams continued producing music for and collaborating with stars, gaining him more attention around the world.

Williams produced musical soundtracks for both Despicable Me and Despicable Me 2, with the hit single “Happy” coming out of the second film’s soundtrack. The song became an overnight sensation around the world and is often used as an anthem to promote positivity. In 2015 Williams performed the single at the Grammy Awards as a tribute to the Black Lives Matter movement.
