Springfield, which is the capital of Illinois, has a rich history that can't be matched anywhere else. Visitors can see the home where Abraham Lincoln spent most of his days before being elected president of the United States, by visiting the Lincoln Home National Historic Site. Lincoln Tomb is another popular attraction among visitors.
The Abraham Lincoln Capital Airport (SPI) is located a three miles outside of downtown Springfield. The airport offers flights to and from Chicago, Dallas/Fort-Worth, Orlando and Fort Myers, Fla. Car rentals are available at the airport, or visitors can also use Springfield Mass Transit District buses to get around town. Those who want to experience even more American history can head to Lincoln's New Salem State Historic Site, 20 miles north of Springfield, a site that retains an 19th century feel. There are several lodging options to choose from, dotted along Interstate 72.
During the winter months in Springfield, the high temperatures usually struggle to get above freezing almost every day. The city also averages more than 21 inches of snow each winter. The city experiences relatively mild temperatures the rest of the year. Arriving in August is a great way for visitors to be a part of the Illinois State Fair. The state fair has been celebrated every year since 1853, and is the birthplace of the corn dog.
