Perched high in the Andes and ringed by volcanoes, Quito is a major city filled with world-class museums, historic architecture, bustling markets and winding cobblestone streets. Highlights include opportunities to explore the old section of the city, now a UNESCO world heritage site, or take in art and culture at the Museo del Banco.
Visitors can take the teleferico, or cable car, to the hills outside Quito for a view of the city and its many nearby volcanoes. Local attractions include Baños and the Mitad del Mundo monument and museum, which sit on the equator about fifteen miles to the north.
Most visitors to Quito will fly into Mariscal Sucre International Airport (UIO), which is located about 11 miles from the city. Taxis are plentiful and are the easiest way to get around. Adventurous travelers can tackle the public transportation system, which is comprised of three trolleybus lines and an extensive bus system. Most visitors either stay in hotels in the historic and charming Old Town, or the modern and lively neighborhood of La Mariscal.
Because of its high altitude, Quito's climate is variable, so you should be prepared for a wide range of weather conditions and typically cool temperatures. October through May is considered the rainy season. While Spanish is the language of the land, English is often spoken in many areas.
