We stayed for a week and had a fantastic time. The location couldn't be better; we loved walking to the beach and to one fun restaurant. The house was immaculate and easy to maintain. We made good use of the balconies, which have terrific ocean views. The layout was great, and even though my husband had several work calls, I could spend time in a different area without hearing him. I truly appreciated that the very friendly and responsive host allowed us to have two small dogs and (unlike many other vacation rental hosts) did not issue a single fussy warning about keeping dogs off furniture. But dog owners should be prepared for a major challenge: There's no garden at all. We needed to accompany our dogs outside again and again (as one was having chemo-related problems with peeing and pooping), and it was quite inconvenient to leash them each time. We used three portable planter boxes to create a barrier so the dogs could be leashless without escaping to the street. This worked, but whenever another dog passed by while ours was doing her business, she became all too interested and posed a flight risk. Manhattan Beach is so densely built up that practically no one has a garden, and we love the area, so we would probably overlook the matter and return to this house. But I did want to warn people about this issue. Also, the bed in the master bedroom is REALLY high, so our dogs couldn't jump on or off. But this is often true in rental houses for some reason.
