Lovely Three-Bedroom Home in Loreto, Baja Fishing Village

Relax in a quiet, friendly community within a small Mexican fishing village on the edge of the Sea of Cortez.

THE HOME
Casa #3 Loreto is an excellent family retreat. The home is very comfortable and fully equipped for your stay. Upper and lower bedrooms have king beds and adjoining bathrooms. The loft bedroom located over the kitchen area has two twin beds that can be can be made into a king bed. The balcony adjacent to the loft bedroom has a large table and four chairs and is our favorite spot to enjoy a cocktail while watching the sun set. Other features of Casa #3 Loreto include a water filtration system that purifies 100% of the water to the house to ensure safe drinking water and ice from the freezer for drinks. Our large fountain on the fully tiled patio provides a refreshing background sound as well as an attractive birdbath for the many local birds. The hummingbird feeders in the back yard are a big hit with the local hummingbirds. Our local property manager is available to provide assistance as needed and is easily reachable on the phone in the house. Please use the link below to see many more photos and learn more details about Casa #3 Loreto.

THE COMMUNITY
Our home is one of eighteen homes in Club El Palmar II. The central feature of this gated community is the 5-foot deep swimming pool with its crystal clear water in the center of the “U-shaped” complex and is about ten steps from the front door of Casa #3 Loreto. Please note that there is no lifeguard at this pool so parents must keep a close eye on their children. The pool is the gathering spot in Club El Palmar II where you can meet your neighbors and learn more about the area and interesting things to do while visiting Loreto. The residents and guests are generally English speaking, very friendly, and are eager to share their knowledge of the town.

THE TOWN
Loreto is a quaint Mexican fishing village on the Sea of Cortez (or Gulf of California if you prefer). The locals are EXTREMELY friendly and polite to all visitors. Tourism is the only industry in the region and visitors are made to feel very welcome. There is no crime, panhandling, drugs or violence, and the town is quite clean. Most of the streets are paved but some of the side streets have not yet been paved. The town is family-oriented and so the few nightspots are pretty tame.

From Club El Palmar II to the central shopping area near the Loreto Mission is a short three-block walk. In addition to shopping, Loreto offers excellent restaurants, and cafes. The most prominent landmark in Loreto is the Mission, built 1697, and is the first mission in all of California and remains in use today. Next to the Mission is a small museum that is worth visiting. From the Mission to the Malicon is about a four-block walk. The Malicon is a street next to the seawall and runs the length of the central portion of town. The marina is at the north end of the Malicon and is where you will go to meet the panga fishing boat and Captain if you arrange to take a fishing trip. By the way, the panga fishermen will clean the fish for you and just about any restaurant in town will cook your fish to order for a very reasonable price. A web search of Loreto BCS Mexico will result in many informative web sites.

THINGS TO DO
Fishing in Loreto is world-class. Although there are marlin and other bill fish in the waters, fin fish like Dorado (Mahi) and Yellowtail Tuna are generally the preferred catch. Other activities in the area include swimming, snorkeling, sea kayaking, horseback riding and sightseeing. Charter a panga to take you to Isla Coronado to enjoy the white sand beaches and clear water. Otherwise, contact the Inn at Loreto Bay or the Mision Hotel in Loreto to see what activities they may be offering.

GETTING THERE
Loreto has a convenient international airport only five miles from town. Alaska Airlines offer non-stop one hour and 45 minutes flights from Los Angles International Airport (LAX) four days per week. In general, the easiest and most direct way to reach Loreto for the central and eastern portions of the US is to fly to LAX, spend the night near the airport, and then take a direct flight the next day from LAX to Loreto. Loreto can also be reached by car. The drive takes about eighteen hours from San Diego along scenic Highway 1. About ten hours after crossing the border you reach the town of Guerreo Negro. This is a good place to stop for the night and make the balance of the trip the following day. It is wise to drive during daylight hours since farm animals frequently stray onto the highway in remote areas at night. Additionally, having two adults awake while driving improves safety. Check with your insurance carrier about coverage for driving in Mexico. Otherwise, contact Vagabundos Del Mar for temporary auto insurance.

The owners were friendly and available if needed. The property manager was often hard to reach. The location was good…just 15 minutes to the wharf and the Malecon.

Spring Break in Loreto

We had an amazing time at Gary and Mel's house! It was exactly what we were looking for, walking distance to town, a nearby market and a well stocked house. We'll be back!

Nice stay in Loreto

Gary the host was very quick to answer questions. He had a lot of suggestions for us and they were all great. Restaurants were right on. The central area in Loreto was really fun to explore. We went fishing one morning and caught 3 yellowtail. Definitely a really nice trip.

Great location if you want everything within walking distance.

Great location, friendly neighbours. A little gem development in the middle of all the conveniences. Great communication with the owner. The stay beat our expectations. Oh, and a pair of roosters that have no idea of what time of day it is!!

Great for our needs

Buddies fishing trip. We've been going to Loreto since the 70's, so we know what we want. Great for us meat and potatoes fishermen. Kitchen had everything and then some. Pleanty of dining space and comfortable sleeping and seating. Location is very close to market, banks, etc..It's also only about a 15 min. walk to the marina, the mission, and the center of town. The only thing that would have been nicer is faster internet, but hey, that's Baja. Great trip otherwise. We will be back.

Water

The whole town ran out of water. Didn’t know we needed to conserve water from holding tank. Had to flush toilet with pool water. The property was the shabbiest of the complex. Broken rocks on patios. No water in advertised babbling fountain. No juice in advertised humming bird feeder.

Convenient but a little noisy

Property convenient to shopping and downtown but a little too noisy for us. There was construction of a new housing unit directly behind the rental as well as construction around the community pool. Not exactly the fault of the owner - no work started until around 8am but still mildly annoying. We went over Christmas holiday so there was the additional celebratory noise that sometimes went to the early morning hours. Again not the fault of the owner! Just something to consider. A suggestion would be to have the property manager meet with renters to give them the run down on the property, ie - parking spot, garbage can location, use of remotes for ceiling fans, split units as well as the remote for the main gate. we had to find the breaker box to shut off the A/C ...ended up getting sick...the Toilet downstairs smelled so bad I ended up using the upstairs....the stink even in the drains of the kitchen smelled so bad I did no cooking....I do not recommend this property

Great house in a great location!

The house is in a great little gated community! It’s next door to the Lay’s grocery store and a couple of blocks to the main town square. The property manager was great and owns a fabulous store in town (she’s English speaking) the home owners were great with communicating with us. Would love to stay here again!!

Great little neighborhood

Location is good for walking to stores and some restaurants. The rental itself is dated and a little worse for the wear. Its comfortable enough, but there is quite a bit of up and down steps within the house. The loft area upstairs has no privacy in the bedrooms, but nicely situated. We can not give it a thumbs up on the cleanliness. Needs some serious scrubbing on the walls, floors, and shower floors. Not looking for a refund or discount. Just stating some facts.

Pretty little casita in quiet complex. Very safe, secure and comfy. Construction was a bit of an issue but can’t control that. We navigated around it ok. We enjoyed our Loreto experience and will be back for sure.

Very nice home

But not for us, as too many step up/step downs between kitchen/bedroom/ bath. It was a little dated but did have all needed throughout. Great response from the owner, Gary and the on-site manager Jennifer. We enjoyed the neighboors, pool, gated area, bikes. Being close to the Loreto community gave us a better appreciation of the v Community. We do plan to return!

Nice location, pool and home in Loreto

This is a great location in the heart of Loreto. The house was well appointed with kitchen gear, linens, towels and comfortable beds. We stayed for the month of November and of the 18 houses in the compound only about six were occupied. The location has convenient access to restaurants, stores and services, all within walking distance. The rental agent and owners were easy to reach and responsive to our inquiries. We enjoyed our stay and recommend this rental to other visitors. Tony and Mary

Comfortable

We stayed at the property for 3 weeks in January/February. When we arrived the unit was clean and tidy. We did call the property manager and report that the satellite television was not working. She was aware of it and was trying to get it resolved. Over the weekend (we arrived on a Friday) we discovered the gas grill did not produce enough heat to barbecue along with a few other housekeeping issues. When the property manager stopped by Monday morning she explained the satellite service tech was not in town so it was uncertain when we would have television back. She said she would have the screen on the front door fixed (it was kicked out when we arrived) and would try to get us a good knife for the kitchen (the only good working knife had a broken handle). She explained the gas grill was a poor design and there was nothing she could do about that. We mentioned we heard a lot of scurrying type noise in the roof and she said she couldn't imagine what that was and not to worry. She was very helpful with hints for shopping, dining out and laundry services in Loreto. The layout for the unit is comfortable for two staying in the master suite on the main floor. However, it was a little awkward for our guests who stayed on the second floor since there is very little separation between bedrooms and only a 3/4 wall for the second floor bathroom. We realized it was going to be a loft configuration but somehow thought there would be more visual separation and certainly did not expect lack of sound insulation from the bathroom. The greatest thing for us with this property was the peaceful setting, great beds, showers and central location. We did get television after two weeks and many phone calls but never did figure out why there was a problem. The scurrying noise from the ceiling continued but there was never any evidence of something inside the unit itself. Overall, our stay was comfortable and reasonable. We would give it a 3+.

Wonderful Stay

We arrived on January 30th with 2 other couples and we were all very happy with the condition of the property. It is nicely situated in the town of Loreto within easy walking distance to most restaurants, stores and bank. it is very close to the Ley's grocery store which makes it great for walking over and getting whatever you may need. We did rent a car for a couple of trips but while you are there it is not important to have a car, just rent one when you need it. I recommend going to the car rental place a day or two before you are planning to rent as they seem to run out fast and then they try and do the old bait and switch for a more expensive rental. The property manager Kathy is a wealth of knowledge on the area and as an expat both her English and Spanish are fluent. The place is in a gated community and though that helps for security we never once felt unsafe in the town of Loreto. We cooked up some fine meals on the BBQ in the back and if you're there for any time make sure you find the fish store. It is only a couple blocks away and I don't think you can find fresher fish anywhere. Enjoy your stay.

Very pleasant place to stay in Loretto

A nice property in a nice, gated development. The property was clean and well maintained and as described. The owner was very helpful. In particular he sent a great tip sheet with favorite restaurants, ATM locations, details about the home, and so on. There is a big grocery store close by. We stayed here without a car and it worked easily. You can walk anywhere in Loreto. Mi Loreto, a restaurant a few blocks away was amazing.

Dissapointed

My wife and I were very disappointed with the overall condition of this house. Upstairs shower did not drain well and smelled of sewer regularly. The entire house was filthy from the blackened fridge handle (which we scrubbed clean) to the 1/4 inch of soot on the light fixtures, to the telephone and TV remotes, disgusting. Cooking gear basically on the kitchen floors in cupboards looked as though it hadn't been used in years. One third of the light bulbs were burned out. Storage areas with years and years of dust. Thatch roof - yes thatch roof - had holes all over and cobwebs hanging everywhere. Drapery was dirty, hairy as was the bedding. The upstairs bathroom sink had disgusting hair caught in the drain which we looked at daily. The bedding and mattresses were substandard for the price - we felt we were robbed. To make it worse our "contact" person was belligerent and made the excuse "what do you expect for Mexico" which we found extremely offensive. We cancelled our 2nd week there and requested to be let out of the first week but the owner refused. In summary, we would not recommend this place nor would we recommend VRBO as they are not checking to see that things are accurately reflected. Surely their should have been a review that reflected the true state of affairs. Given the other wealth of wonderful accommodation in Loreto for less money, we would never do this again. This home requires a complete overhaul.
