Guests commonly arrive in Nicaragua by flying into the Augusto César Sandino International Airport (MGA) in Managua. Drive to the Colonial city of Leon and stroll down cobblestone streets, or go boarding down the side of the Cerro Negro volcano. Hike to the top of the Masaya crater at night or learn surfing at San Juan del Sur. Granada also remains popular for its array of historic 17th century buildings and hidden courtyards.
Guests that have booked specific tours are often met at the airport by company transportation services, visitors can make similar arrangements with hotels. Public buses and taxis are also available. A number of brand name rental companies are on hand with a wide selection of vehicles. After acquiring a rental car, leave the airport by turning west on Highway 1, which leads to the heart of Managua.
Fans of archeology or history can venture to the Archipielago Zapatera off the coast of Granada, to see the collection of ancient stone carvings that date back to 500 B.C. The Isla el Muerto features pictographs on a massive stone slab that lies on the summit. A visit to the small community of El Castillo includes a trip up a hill to explore the 17th century Spanish fort, known as El Castillo de la Inmaculada Concepciòn de Maria. The expansive site was constructed as a defense against pirates.
