Flights to Argentina

Flights to Argentina are direct between countries in North America, Europe, Australia, and Asia, as well as all South American countries (except the Guianas). The national carrier, Aerolíneas Argentinas, has a good reputation for international flights (local and regional are another story). Nearly all flights to Argentina from international ports of call land at the Aeropuerto Internacional Ministro Pistarini about 40 minutes by bus or cab from Buenos Aires. Neighboring regional airports called "International" usually mean neighboring countries only. About 11 miles from the city center, the Ministro Pistarini airport has the infrastructure to handle very large aircraft from far locations, and has many services, including shops and restaurants, medical facilities, and showers for first and club class passengers.

Argentina Weather

If you are flying from, say, New York in August, your Argentina flights will put you in the middle of winter. Temperatures vary from region to region. For example, Buenos Aires has mild temperatures from March-May (fall) and from September-November (spring) it is perfect for a visit. You'll want to avoid the height of summer (from December – March), when beaches are packed with locals. Patagonia and the Andes are best visited in summer, when days are longer and warmer in the heights. The northwest area of Argentina is best saved for winter, when the mercury has backed down the thermometer a bit.

Getting Around Argentina

You can drive around Argentina, but it can be a bit more expensive than other forms of transportation. Recently Argentina has reestablished long-distance passenger trains, and buses and local trains get you around Buenos Aires without much difficulty. There are also several long distance train companies that run from Buenos Aires to Tucumán and Córdoba, and there is a lovely train ride in northwestern Salta called the Train to the Clouds. You can also get around on domestic flights, but tickets can be expensive. The best method to tour the country is by bus. Both short and long distance bus networks are fantastic, and can be divided into expensive buses and less expensive buses. The more expensive buses often include meals on board as well as seats that recline into beds.

Argentina Attractions

Argentina may be best known for the Tango, but its lovely landscape and wonderful, hospitable people make it a fantastic place to visit. The most popular and well-known travelers' destination is Buenos Aires, but take the time to get off the beaten track a little bit and you will fall in love with the country. Some places to get you started include:

  • Iguazú Falls, with 275 individual waterfalls and an amazing set of catwalks to get you right up to the water.
  • El Chaltén, lesser known, fairly inaccessible, but with scenery worth a visit for hikers and climbers.
  • Puerto Madryn, with Southern Right Whales, Magellanic penguins, and a wildlife sanctuary for birds.
  • El Bolsón, alternative, anti-nuclear living, with an outdoor handcrafts fair three times a week.
  • La Boca port, in Buenos Aires. Where they dance the tango right there on the street.
