I recently stayed at Fred Hotel in Zurich, and while the room was a decent size and the location convenient, the negatives far outweighed the positives.
The self check-in, advertised as simple, was frustrating as the lockers never worked. On arrival, the bathroom trash can was already full, and since no staff were available, it stayed that way. Housekeeping was not included unless paid for separately, which was never mentioned during booking. Cleanliness was poor overall: the bath mat had a visible footprint, the bathroom ventilator couldn’t be turned off, the sink drained slowly, and the room smelled unpleasantly like a hospital. The pillows were paper-thin, and the towels and bath towels were old, thin, and fraying.
Noise was another major problem. Trams ran right outside the window until 1 a.m., and with a poorly sealed balcony door, soundproofing was virtually nonexistent. On top of this, there was no phone in the room, meaning I had to physically go to the front desk for any assistance.
Most concerning of all, my personal data appears to have been compromised. I received WhatsApp phishing messages that included details of my stay — something that has never happened in over ten years of using Expedia. When I raised this, the hotel’s only response was to advise me not to interact with the scammer, without apology or acknowledgment.
Overall, despite its size and location, Fred Hotel failed in cleanliness, comfort, service, and security. I cannot recommend it.
