About this property
A design-led cottage tucked into the coastal forest of Bowen Island. Created for couples but suitable for up to four, the Laneway Cottage pairs elevated, tactile interiors with exceptional access to trails, lakes and beaches..
Escape to the brand new Laneway Cottage, an intimate forest retreat where luxury is felt through thoughtful design. Created for couples or groups of up to four seeking a restorative getaway, the cottage features beautifully curated interiors, a fully equipped kitchen, Breville espresso bar, Sangre de Fruta bath amenities, fast Wi-Fi and easy access to Bowen Island’s most beautiful trails and beaches.
Your privacy is an important part of the Ffern experience. Guests are given the space to arrive, settle in and enjoy the cottage independently, without unnecessary interruption.
The Discover Bowen team provides local guest support and will be available by message before and throughout your stay. We can assist with arrival questions, cottage details, island recommendations or anything unexpected that may arise. We aim to be warm and responsive while remaining unobtrusive: close at hand when needed and otherwise allowing you to experience the stillness of the property at your own pace.
Discover Bowen has Experience Partnerships with a range of local adventure outfitters—including Bowen e-Bikes, Bowen Island Sea Kayaking, Mountain Tide Adventures, MIST Thermal Spa, mobile yoga, spa, and massage therapy service providers, and more. Be sure to inquire about direct bookings and discounts for Discover Bowen partner properties, including the Laneway Cottage.
The Laneway Cottage is located in the Mt. Gardner area of Bowen Island, where forest, freshwater and the shoreline come together. The neighbourhood feels peaceful and removed from the activity of the village, yet Snug Cove is still only a short drive away.
The location is particularly special for guests who want to explore Bowen on foot. The Mt. Gardner trail network is close by, offering everything from quiet woodland walks to longer and more challenging hikes. Trails wind beneath mature trees and connect into a larger landscape of mossy forest, rocky viewpoints and coastal terrain.
Killarney Lake and Crippen Regional Park are also nearby. The lake loop is one of Bowen’s most loved walks, passing through forest and wetland scenery with frequent places to pause beside the water.
During the warmer months, guests can swim from Mt. Gardner Dock or Woods Road Beach. These are relaxed local swimming places rather than large developed beaches, offering clear water and a quieter experience of the coastline.
Snug Cove is close enough for coffee, dinner or an afternoon of browsing. The village is home to cafés, restaurants, artisan shops, groceries, the marina and the ferry terminal. It is easy to spend the day exploring the island and then return to the calm of the forest.
The location offers the best of both experiences: a genuine retreat in nature without the isolation of being far from the village.
Guests have exclusive use of the entire laneway cottage during their stay, including:
* The private bedroom
* Full bathroom
* Kitchen and dining area
* Living room
* Private entrance
* Designated guest parking
* Outdoor areas specifically identified for cottage guests
The Laneway Cottage is an intimate, design-led retreat set within the coastal forest of Bowen Island. Created for couples and solo travellers, the cottage offers the rare balance of feeling deeply immersed in nature while remaining close to Snug Cove, swimming beaches and some of the island’s most beautiful walking and hiking trails.
The interiors have been thoughtfully composed rather than conventionally furnished. Moroccan rugs, soft sheepskins, natural materials, dimmable lighting and carefully chosen books create a space that feels layered, tactile and deeply comfortable. The atmosphere is elevated but never formal—luxury expressed through texture, warmth, restraint and attention to detail.
Mornings can begin slowly, with locally roasted coffee prepared using the Breville espresso machine or pour-over set. A curated collection of loose-leaf teas and a matcha set offer another kind of ritual. In the bathroom, Sangre de Fruta shampoo, conditioner and body wash bring the scents and textures of the Pacific Northwest into the everyday experience of the stay.
The cottage can accommodate up to four guests in two beds but it is particularly well suited to a romantic getaway for couples, restorative solo stays, or a quiet island retreat shared with someone close. The private bedroom, full kitchen, comfortable living area and beautifully considered details allow the cottage to feel like a small home rather than simply a place to sleep.
Outside, mature trees, moss-covered ground and shifting forest light shape the rhythm of the day. Guests can walk directly into the surrounding landscape, explore the nearby Mt. Gardner trail network, swim from Woods Road Beach or Mt. Gardner Dock, or spend a peaceful afternoon beside Killarney Lake. Snug Cove’s restaurants, cafés, shops and ferry terminal remain only a short drive away.
The Laneway Cottage is a place for slower mornings, long walks, quiet evenings and the pleasure of being somewhere where nothing feels rushed. Here, luxury is not displayed. It is felt—in the softness of the light, the quality of the objects around you, the proximity of the forest and the freedom to unfurl in your own time.
SPACE
Ffern Laneway Cottage is intimate rather than expansive, but every room has been carefully considered. The layout is comfortable for two guests, with distinct spaces for sleeping, cooking, reading and relaxing.
*Living room*
The living area is warm, relaxed and richly layered. Moroccan rugs, sheepskins, beautiful coffee-table books and tactile natural materials create a sense of depth and character, while dimmable lighting allows the mood to shift from bright mornings to soft, atmospheric evenings. It is a comfortable place to read, enjoy a glass of wine, listen to music or settle in after a day on the trails. The room has been styled with the care of a private home rather than the predictability of a typical vacation rental. It includes a high end Crate & Barrel queen sofa bed for overflow guests if your party has more than 2 people. Once set up, it is a special place to sleep—you can fall asleep to the crackle of the wood stove in the off season.
*Kitchen and coffee experience*
The full kitchen allows guests to prepare anything from a simple breakfast to a leisurely dinner at home. Particular attention has been given to the morning ritual. Guests can prepare espresso using the Breville Bambino machine and burr grinder, make pour-over coffee with locally selected beans, enjoy ceremonial-style matcha or choose from a curated collection of high-quality loose-leaf teas. The intention is not simply to provide coffee and tea, but to create a small daily ritual worth slowing down for.
*Bedroom*
The private bedroom is calm, cocoon-like and designed for deep rest. Soft lighting, natural textures and a restrained palette create a peaceful separation from the main living space.
*Bathroom*
The private bathroom is stocked with elevated bath and body essentials from Sangre de Fruta, including shampoo, conditioner and body wash. These botanical products were chosen to complement the atmosphere of the cottage and bring an additional sense of care and ritual to the stay.
*Forest and trailside setting*
The cottage sits within a mature, landscaped property surrounded by towering trees and dense coastal greenery. Light changes continually through the canopy, and the sounds of birds, wind, rain and local wildlife are part of the experience. The setting feels quiet and tucked away, although the cottage remains conveniently close to Snug Cove and many of Bowen Island’s most loved outdoor destinations. If you love to walk, cycle, or trail run, there are adventures right at your doorstep. The property lies at the edge of the Killarney Lake and Crippen Park trail systems.
Bowen Island is reached by a scenic ferry crossing from Horseshoe Bay in West Vancouver to Snug Cove. Guests bringing a vehicle can drive directly onto the ferry and continue to Ffern after arriving on the island. We recommend checking the sailing schedule and allowing extra travel time during summer weekends and holidays (arrive at the ferry terminal at least 1 hour ahead of the scheduled sailing you wish to catch).
Bringing a car is strongly recommended, particularly for guests travelling with luggage or hoping to explore multiple beaches, trails and restaurants during their stay. The cottage is a short drive from Snug Cove, but Bowen Island’s destinations are spread across the island.
A TransLink community shuttle operates between Snug Cove and the Mt. Gardner area, with service generally coordinated around selected ferry sailings. Service is limited, and guests relying on public transit should review the current timetable carefully before travelling.
Bowen Island does not have a taxi, Uber or other dependable ride-hailing service.
Cycling and e-biking can be enjoyable ways to explore, although Bowen is hilly and many roads do not have dedicated bike lanes. Seasonal bicycle, e-bike or other small-vehicle rentals are available to rent from Bowen e-bikes.
Getting to the Laneway Cottage: The address is 1440 Fernie Road, but Google Maps will *not* guide you to the right address on Fernie Road. You can enter 1384 Fernie Road as the address and that will get you to the right place. Be sure to get your directions set up before you leave Snug Cove, as there is no mobile reception in some spots along the way to the property. Drive slowly when you get onto Fernie Road. It's a dirt road, and there are some potholes as well as many curves and hills.
