A Modern Twist on a Classic Tale
Based on the book by Arthur Laurents, West Side Story takes the iconic story of Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare and transposes it into the Upper West Side of New York City in the 1950s. Based in an urban setting, West Side Story explores a long standing rivalry between two teenage gangs looking to run the neighborhood. Coming from different ethnical backgrounds, the Sharks and the Jets are at a constant battle with each other. That is, until a former member of the Jets falls in love with Maria, the younger sister of the Sharks leader. A forbidden love story unfolds as the two gangs explore breaking social norms to get along with each other. It is not until a tragedy strikes that the two are able to put aside their differences and come together as one.
Original Production
West Side Story first came to a Broadway stage in 1957, with Jerome Robbins directing and choreographing the musical. The musical ran for over 700 performances, and eventually toured throughout the nation. The original Broadway production was nominated for several Tony Awards, bringing home Best Choreography and Best Scenic Design. Gaining critical acclaim, the musical went on to have several revivals on Broadway, as well as several US and world tours. The musical had even gotten a film adaption in 1961 starring Natalie Wood. The film went on to be nominated for eleven academy awards, bringing home all but one award.
In 2019 the story was revived once again bringing the classic tale to the Broadway stage beginning in 2020. Offering a new, radical twist on the tale, director Ivo van Hove, choreographer Anne Teresa de Keersmaeker and set designer Jan Versweyveld came together to bring the story to life. The musical opened officially at the Broadway Theatre on February 20, 2020. Fans of the original production do not want to miss their chance to see this new, revived version of the musical.
