The Head and the Heart has a rambling origin story, a collection of serendipitous meetings at open mic nights in the Seattle area. The band's name was chosen in homage to practicality and passion. The indie folk band started making a name for themselves on the local scene, selling CDs in denim sleeves at shows. Labels quickly started courting The Head and the Heart, and in 2010 Sub Pop won their favor. The Head and the Heart was re-released, and the group toured with Vampire Weekend, Iron & Wine, My Morning Jacket, and Death Cab for Cutie to drum up a national fan base. In 2013 they released their sophomore album, Let's Be Still, which climbed to No. 10 on the charts. They performed a sold-out show at Red Rocks, a defining moment in any artist's career, but laden with poignancy as co-founder Josiah Johnson was sidelined by a battle with drug addiction. Still, the band soldiered on with their third album, Signs of Light, which was released in 2016.
