It seems almost unimaginable to start a football program from scratch and bring it into a major conference less than a decade later. Such a scenario did occur with the South Florida Bulls. In the span of nine seasons, South Florida went from being a new NCAA Division I-AA football program to joining the Big East Conference. South Florida played its first football season in 1997. The first coach of the football program was Jim Leavitt, a former defensive coordinator for the Kansas State Wildcats. It joined Conference USA in 2003 after spending two more seasons as an independent.

South Florida made its first bowl appearance against the North Carolina State Wolfpack in the 2005 Meineke Car Care Bowl. The team's first bowl victory came the following season when South Florida defeated East Carolina 24-7 in the 2006 Papa Johns Bowl.
South Florida entered the AP Top 25 Poll for the first time during the 2007 season. The Bulls won six straight games to open the season, a stretch that included victories over Auburn, North Carolina and West Virginia. A 6-0 start led to a school best no. 2 ranking. The Bulls finished 9-4 and matched their school record for most wins in a season.
In 2010, Skip Holtz took over as head coach and became just the second head football coach in school history. Holtz is the son of former football coach Lou Holtz.
Growth in the South Florida football program has led to offering an increased number of tickets to South Florida Bulls football games. South Florida plays home games at Raymond James Stadium, the home of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Initially, the team just sold South Florida Bulls football tickets in the lower deck.
