Making History

Iron Maiden is one of the most influential heavy metal bands of the 1970’s and 1980’s. The band originated in Leyton, East London in 1975. Songwriter and bassist Steve Harris left his original band to create Iron Maiden on Christmas day of that year. Harris named the band after a film adaptation of ‘The Man in the Iron Mask’ by Alexandre Dumas, because it reminded him of the torture device, the Iron Maiden. The band currently consists of six members- Steve Harris on bass and backup vocals, Bruce Dickinson, the lead vocalist, Nicko McBrain on the drums, and “the three amigos” on guitar, Dave Murray, Adrian Smith, and Janick Gers. Iron maiden helped set the stage for rock bands in the coming decade such as Metallica and Slipknot. The band was influenced by popular artists such as AC/DC, Alice Cooper, Jimi Hendrix, Queen, Rush, and The Who. The heavier aspects of their music were specifically influenced by Black Sabbath, Deep Purple, and even Led Zeppelin. Front man, Harris, developed this style from all the aforementioned talent, which is why some say that the band has developed such a diverse and dedicated fan base. The band hit their peak in the 1980’s, when they released multiple platinum and gold albums in both the United States and the United Kingdom. These include 1982’s The Number of the Beast, 1983’s Piece of Mind, 1984’s Powerslave, 1985’s Live After Death, 1986’s Somewhere in Time, and 1988’s Seventh Son of a Seventh Son. Bruce Dickinson and Adrian Smith decided to leave the band for a few years in the beginning of the 1990s, but returned in 1999, which brought a resurgence of popularity. In 2010 the band released The Final Frontier, which reached number one in 28 countries and received widespread critical acclaim. The Book of Souls was released in 2015, which had similar success. The band has released a total of 38 albums, consisting of 16 studio albums, 12 live albums, 4 EPs, and 7 compilations.

Iron Maiden has little radio and television support but are still considered one of the most successful heavy metal bands. The Sunday Times reported that in 2017 the band had sold over 100 million copies of their albums. The band also won the Ivor Novello Award for international achievement in 2002. The band has played over 2,000 live shows from India to Costa Rica, Australia to Argentina, Sao Paulo to Tokyo and many more. Another factor that makes the band so famous is their mascot, “Eddie”. Ed is a constant in the groups tours, artwork, video games, and merchandise. The papier-mâché mask was originally featured on the band’s first album cover and has been a part of every tour since, following the different themes of the albums released.
