Early in 1991, Virginia bartender David John Matthews decided to make a demo of a few songs he had written. Matthews called a few musicians to join him for the recording: Carter Beauford for the drums, LeRoi Moore on sax, Stefan Lessard on bass, Perter Griesar on keyboard and Boyd Tinsley on violin. The Dave Matthews Band (DMB) was born; their first public performance took place at the Charlottesville Earth Day Festival in April of 1991.

By 1993 The Dave Matthews Band put out their first album, a live recording of a performance on Nantucket Island. This album was recorded under an independent label called Bama Rags. It was a complete success and as the band's popularity grew they began touring wider areas and drawing larger crowds. The Dave Mathews Band recorded their second album in 1994 under the RCA label, and began their national tour. The band has helped victims of Hurricane Katrina and has supported Habitat for Humanity with donations to create residences for residents and local musicians in New Orleans. But all the humanitarian efforts have not slowed their tour schedules down. The band has toured with, and performed alongside, many top musical artists, including John Mayer, The Rolling Stones, and Phil Vassar.
