The latest incarnation of a city dating back more than 5,000 years, New Delhi has much to offer both first-time visitors and seasoned travelers. After landing at Indira Gandhi International Airport (DEL) in the west of the city, you can drive your rental car to Lodhi Garden. Take a walk around if you want to take in the local sights in the heart of the city, before settling in at your hotel.
You’ll find the main route from Rashtrapati Bhavan, the President's residence, is especially traveler-friendly, with charming local vendors and prime picnic spots. The National Zoological Park is home to many treasured animals, including rare white tigers. Drive to South Delhi if you want to enjoy some upscale shopping at DLF Emporio, or catch a movie at DLF Promenade in Vasant Kunj. In Mehrauli, you'll find ancient towers and sacred mosques to explore.
Your flight from Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR) to Indira Gandhi International should take about 15 hours. New Delhi isn't really all that pedestrian friendly, at least outside of the main part of the city, so you'll likely want to either get around in your rental car, or take advantage of the "hop on, hop off" buses that go to most of the popular destinations.
