San José, the capital city of Costa Rica, abounds in historic sites, contemporary art galleries like the Museo de Arte y Diseño Contemporáneo, colonial mansions and colorful markets. Its bustling nightlife at venues like Vertigo, and cultural attractions appeal to people of all ages.
As soon as you arrive at the Juan Santamaría International Airport (SJO), you can rent a car and explore the city. Spend at least one day at the Tabacón Hot Springs, play tennis in the Parque Metropolitano La Sabana, or tour Rincón de la Vieja National Park.
This city dates back to colonial times, featuring unique historic neighborhoods to explore and urban art. Visitors can admire World War II era buildings, stand-out monuments, as well as open-air sculpture gardens. The most popular sights include the Costa Rican Art Museum, the Blue Castle, Plaza de la Democracia and Our Lady of Sion Building. Once you get at the airport, look for car rental services or take a bus into the heart of San José.
Flight time from the San Francisco International Airport (SFO) to San José is approximately six and a half hours. When you land, check out the airport's duty-free shops before picking up your rental car. Once you get through Customs, you'll be in close proximity to the in-terminal rental car counters.
