There is an unfenced river in the grounds.. Tucked away on a private island in the River Weaver, this incredibly unique two-bedroom Victorian former lock keeper’s cottage offers a peaceful escape in the heart of the Cheshire countryside.
Dating back to the 19th century, the cottage was originally built for navigation workers managing Dutton Locks. Today, it sleeps four guests across two comfortable bedrooms and has two bathrooms: one with a beautiful roll-top bath, and another with a generously sized shower cubicle.
Two inviting sitting rooms are connected by a striking double-sided wood-burning stove, creating a wonderfully cosy space for relaxing together. Outside, the gently tiered garden makes the most of its exceptional riverside setting. Unwind in the wood-fired hot tub while taking in views across the Weaver Valley towards the magnificent Dutton Viaduct, Dutton Horse Bridge and Dutton Sluices – remarkable feats of Victorian engineering.
Reached along a single-track tarmacked bridleway beside the river, the journey to the cottage is all part of the experience. Once there, the surrounding Weaver Way towpaths provide superb opportunities for walking, cycling, angling, kayaking, birdwatching and wildlife spotting.
The village of Weaverham is around a five-minute drive away, while the popular, dog-friendly Leigh Arms, which serves food, is less than a mile’s walk along the bridleway.
Children and pets are warmly welcomed, making this a wonderful choice for a family escape. Due to the cottage’s unique riverside setting, however, close supervision is essential around the river and locks. As you would expect from a historic property, the cottage also has steep, narrow stairs leading to the first floor.
