Waikoloa Beach Resort sits closest to the action. Come October, the highway out front becomes part of the Ironman World Championship's 112-mile bike leg - athletes pass within a few miles of your lanai on their way north toward Hawi and back. The drive into Kailua-Kona for the swim start or the marathon finish runs about 35 minutes on a normal day, longer on race morning when Queen Kaahumanu Highway manages traffic for the cyclists. Plan an early departure, or simply watch the field roll by from Waikoloa itself. Stays of 6 nights or more include a complimentary rental car - worth having during a week this close to the course.
