We wanted a ryokan experience and that is what we received. The hotel is over 100 years old but very well maintained and there were onsens there to relax. The private onsen was especially nice. The staff were excellent and very welcoming and friendly and really made our experience special. I highly recommend their Japanese breakfast.
The two ladies at the reception were absolutely lovely, warm and gave great advice for where to go in the surrounding area. They also dressed us in the traditional clothing and took lots of photos (this was a free experience). Definitely some of the best service we have received since staying in Japan. The breakfast was also delicious and is authentically Japanese. Go here if you want a true Japanese experience with clean rooms, kind staff, an onsen, and overall just a lovely time!
The staff were so friendly and welcoming. We greatly enjoyed meeting and chatting with them.
The breakfast was delicious and they took care to accommodate our vegetarian request.
The room was clean, comfortable, and very cozy. The onsen was wonderful!
If you are looking for a true Japanese experience stay here. Wish we booked longer than one night. Very friendly staff and helpful. Felt like we were getting the full cultural experience. A bit outside of the city area but well worth it!
We really enjoyed staying here.
Great staff and very helpful.
It was cool experience to have the fireplace in the room and pick our own yukata.
We appreciate all the staff to make us feeling “ home”.
Room was spotless and staff were very nice and helpful (they do go above and beyond). The room was spacious enough (we got the comfort room) and comfortable for my partner and I. It didn’t come with an irori but had a nice bath.
It is about a half an hour leisurely walk to the main city area where all the things are happening. I found it to be an easy walk. There are a few restaurants and convenience stores close by. It was a relaxing getaway! The Kaiseki breakfast was a good experience and we also rented the private onsen. Thank you for a wonderful stay!
Excellent staff, spoke very good English, very helpful and friendly.
Great facilities with a traditional Japanese greeting on check-in. Very warm and welcoming
We had a really great experience staying at this traditional Japanese hotel, really friendly and helpful staff made our stay very enjoyable. We had plenty of help with finding local attractions and restaurants and even booking taxis and making reservations for restaurants. The common areas were really clean and cosy. We requested to change our room free of extra charge, which was really great as not all rooms have showers inside bathrooms.
The staff tried very hard to welcome us and introduce us to Japanese culture and customs which was very interesting and helpful. The traditional Japanese breakfast was fantastic. The small touches like origami teaching and incense burning was special.

Liked: Cleanliness, staff & service, amenities
The staff are warm, helpful, clear in giving guidance. The breakfast was sumptuous. We had a family suite with two rooms. The only thing we wish it could be better is to have a shower room in the suite. However we enjoyed the public onsen bath, with a shower room. The place was spotless, authentically decorated, well-preserved Japanese culture and hospitality. Thank you!
This place is magic, staff hospitality is from another world.
Had a fantastic 2 night stay, pampered with every single detail.
110% recomended.
Horisaki and Haruka are over the top!
Excellent Japanese hospitality! Staff was very helpful and had tried very best in explaining everything. On the day of check out the staff even took us by his own car to the train station free of charge as we could not book a taxi. Breakfast offered was of good quality.
An absolutely must stay in Takayama. The ryokan has everything that embodies the Japanese spirit with all the comforts that you need.
The ryokan despite being over a 100 years old is incredibly comfortable with spotless rooms, that are generously sized for you to feel both comfortable and at home.
The standout, however, is not the cozy nature of the ryokan, or the countless little touches they have throughout that make you feel at home but the spectacular staff.
The staff are welcoming, courteous and make every effort for you to have an enjoyable stay. They are incredibly hospitable and helped us on numerous occasions with restaurant bookings (as we did not have a local Japanese number) as well as assisting us after our stay with lost property (not at the ryokan either!).
I would not hesitate to come back to Gifu just to stay at the Hidaya again.
Best accommodation for Japanese Culture Enthusiast
That was the best accomodation of the whole trip. This classic authentic Japanese inn is so ready to welcome and serve foreigners. Not only their way of serving, the knowledge they brought to their customers are huge and deep. It helps a lot with the customers to understand the etiquette and ritual of staying in Japanese classic inn.
For those enthusiasts of Japanese culture, I highly recommend this accommodation. It will bring you some unforgettable experiences. After the stay you will definitely love Japan more.
I loved everything of this accommodation except transportation. I was really satisfied with super friendly and nice service and very traditional Japanese atmosphere which I really wanted. If I come back to Dakayama once again, I’ll definitely come back here! for the location, I would recommend you to take a taxi unless you are okay with walking about 30mins from station and bus terminal. Taxi usually charges you about 1000~1200 yen for about 7~9mins of driving distance.
We had an excellent stay at the Irori Yado Hidaya. The staff are excellent and make your stay great by their attention to detail and their friendliness. The hotel is a traditional Ryokan i.e. you sleep on futons, have floor seats etc. and we loved embracing this for 2 nights. The hotel offers free incence, candy, tea, and you can try on Yukata's on and even borrow them to go into town.
The only things to note is that there are no showers in the room, and if you wish to shower you have to use the communal onsen (seperated by gender). This does not bother me personally, however you have to go naked into the Onsen, which may put some people off. We loved the experience, and want to thank all the staff again for being excellent.
The property was clean and interesting as an old Ryokan. But they have NO PRIVATE RESTROOMS and the stairs were very steep. My knees couldn’t handle the stairs and my wife requires a private bathroom so we left to another property. Satirical was very nice but refused to refund the unused dates of our reservation. We were only there one night. Expedia.com also refused refunding unused dates. So if you like a private restroom Do Not Stay here!
