Willa Lumia - Aurora Skylight Villa
Welcome to Willa Lumia!
Lie back, turn off the lamp and watch the aurora through the heated skylight above your bed. The glass-igloo view, except the whole villa is yours.
Willa Lumia is a 135 m² architect-designed log villa on the shore of Lake Norvajärvi, 15 min from Rovaniemi airport and 10 min from Santa Claus Village. Private sauna, open fire, a pier of your own — and not one street light in any direction.
3 bedrooms, sleeps 9.
THE SPACE:
Willa Lumia was designed by architect Jouko Rytkönen for this exact stretch of shoreline: 135 m² of hand-carved log wall, black timber and glass, standing in pine forest fifteen metres from the water, just above the Arctic Circle.
It is a private house, not a resort. No reception, no lobby, no one else`s schedule — just your own plot, your own shoreline and your own front door.
THE SKY BEDROOM
One bedroom has a heated skylight set directly above the bed. Heated is the whole point — it never frosts and never fogs, so from late August to early April you can lie on your back with the lights off and watch whatever the Arctic sky decides to do. The Finnish word for the northern lights is revontulet: fox fires, from the old story of a fox running across the fells and throwing sparks off its tail.
THE LIVING SPACE
Kitchen, dining table and living room open into one tall room under a pitched timber ceiling. One wall is almost entirely glass, so the lake is in the room whether you look at it or not. A wood fire burns in a stone-built fireplace at the centre — firewood provided, and yes, it is yours to use. The dining table extends and there are benches for everyone, so all nine of you eat together rather than in shifts. Above, a loft with hanging chairs, for the person in every group who wants to read away from the conversation.
THE GLASS TERRACE
A covered terrace under a glass roof, with a second open fireplace, patio heaters and hanging chairs facing the water. This is where people actually end up: minus twenty outside, fire lit, blanket on, sky overhead, nobody wanting to go to bed. It is also the best aurora-watching seat in the house that doesn`t require lying down.
THE SAUNA
A proper Finnish sauna — dark panelling, lit benches, electric stove, ready whenever you are, no firewood and no waiting. Beyond it, a washroom in black stone with twin rain showers, so nine people can get through an evening without a queue. The dressing room has antler hooks and rolled towels waiting.
THE SHORE
A boardwalk runs down through the heather to a private pier with a ladder into the lake. Beside it, a fire pit with a proper grill, and a heavy timber swing facing west across the water. In summer the bottom here is clean sand and the sun doesn`t set at all from late May to late July. In winter the lake freezes solid and you can walk out onto it from your own garden — or come straight from the sauna, at your own risk.

WHY THIS INSTEAD OF A GLASS IGLOO
An igloo gives two people a glass roof for one night. Willa Lumia gives nine people the same sky, plus a kitchen you can cook Christmas dinner in, a sauna that`s yours alone, two open fires, a lake at the bottom of the garden, and a door you can close behind your whole group. Do the arithmetic on four igloos for a family and the comparison tends to end there.
GUEST ACCESS:
The entire villa is yours — every room, the sauna, the terrace, the fire pit, the pier and the shoreline. No shared spaces and no other guests; the nearest neighbouring house is out of your way and out of your evening.
We`re Lapland Host, a local team in Rovaniemi. Your check-in instructions come before you arrive, and we`re reachable throughout your stay — for a restaurant booking, a husky safari, an aurora alert at one in the morning, or a question about how hot the sauna is supposed to get.
THE NEIGHBOURHOOD:
Willa Lumia sits on the shore of Lake Norvajärvi, a twenty-minute drive north of Rovaniemi and just above the Arctic Circle. Pine forest on three sides, water on the fourth, and no street lighting anywhere near — which is exactly why the sky looks the way it does here.
- Rovaniemi Airport — 7 km, about 15 minutes
- Santa Claus Village & Santa`s Main Post Office — 9.5 km
- SantaPark — 10 km
- Rovaniemi centre, Arktikum, Korundi, restaurants — 14 km
- Arctic Golf — 13.5 km
AURORA SEASON — LATE AUGUST TO EARLY APRIL
The northern lights are visible on roughly 150 nights a year in Finnish Lapland, most often between 9pm and 2am on a clear night. What separates a good aurora base from a bad one is darkness, and there is no street lighting here at all — only motion-sensor lights on the paths, which turn themselves off again. You don`t need to book a tour or drive anywhere to hunt: you step onto the terrace, or you don`t even get out of bed.
