Booked the room not knowing the hotel was CLOSED so had to pay for a new room somewhere else while we wait a week or longer for a refund. Don't allow bookings if you arent open.

First room we got given after booking a single queen was a double queen room right next to the front desk. Right off the bat the toilet wasn’t flushed and there was brown gunk on the sink I wiped off. Then I found someone’s used hair rubber bands on the floor and a bag of takis with crumbs all over the floor. The next thing I noticed was hairs in the bed on the sheets and the corner of the room was carelessly splattered with sheet rock from a ceiling repair, so much so that it was on the curtains and lamps, as well as the unplugged phone I found tucked away in a drawer, as if the staff was trying to hide the shame of such a gross hotel room. Oh and the bathtub was black. I asked for a different room which the clerk obliged.The second room we got was a single queen room 2 doors down which appeared to be fine, until we lifted the sheets and found mold and crusty gunk in the middle of the bed. After this we promptly left and got a room somewhere else.

My recent stay at the Econo Lodge Black Hills, Rapid City from August 18, 2025 to August 22, 2025 with my family. We stayed for four nights, and we also paid an additional daily charge for our puppy. However, during the entire stay, our room was never cleaned or serviced by housekeeping. On the first day housekeeping was missed, I informed the front desk while requesting clean towels. Unfortunately, no housekeeping was provided for the remainder of our stay. We also had to collect our own towels from the front desk and carry our own garbage to the large bin near the main floor exit door. On the third day, my husband personally saw housekeeping in the hallway cleaning the room before ours. He asked them directly to clean our room. However, when we returned around 7:00 pm, our room had still not been cleaned. Additionally, when I asked the front desk for shampoo, the staff told me there was none available in the supply bin and only provided two bars of soap — no shampoo was ever supplied. Given that we were paying full room rates plus additional pet fees, this complete lack of service and basic amenities was both unacceptable and deeply disappointing. It falls well below the standard we expect from the Choice Hotels brand.

Filthy, stinking, broken down, rude. We left after the 2nd room was just as disgusting as the first. Fur, hair all over beds, hair balls backing up in the shower, broken bed, broken furniture, dusty, sticky floors, bathroom was gross, dead bugs, dust everywhere. We refused to stay there and take "something" home with us!

Horrendous stay

Econo Lodge Black Hills charged $250/night for a horrendous experience. Worst experience of our life in all the travels throughout US and the world. The bathroom ceiling had mold, the toilet was poorly installed and the caulk used years ago was disgustingly dirty. The furniture had signs of prints, not sure if it was ever cleaned. Elevator had a hole in the tile, the parking lot was a hole ridden obstacle course. By the time we were in our room, there was no way to turn around, card was already charged so we were stuck but we are hoping nobody is going to experience this and Choice Hotels will take action and refund us the money.

At least there was a dirty sock

We found a dirty sock between the bed and the wall. This was helpful as the peephole was all hole, no peep and we were able to stuff the sock into the hole so people couldn't see in. There was also a broken mirror, a weird sticky spot on the floor, and it smelled weird. Oh, the pool? It's only open until 9pm and it doesn't open til 11am (after you have to be checked out) so good luck using it.

EAD REVIEWS!!! This was a last minute booking that looked great online with an awesome slide for my kids. Unfortunately I read the reviews after booking a non-refundable room. Everything people complained about is 💯. Owned and operated by foreigners it's disgusting and unkept. Place is literally falling apart. Upon arrival I mentioned the poor reviews and asked if I could get another room if necessary. She said as long as we don't disrupt the room but that it's non-refundable. Pool was so dirty you couldn't see the bottom. Usually you can smell the pool when walking inside a building. I didn't even smell chlorine in the pool room! I couldn't see the bottom of the pool, even halfway down you can't see someone's legs. The slide has separated from the bracket in one spot but several people went down without injury, though it shook really bad. Tiles on the wall are falling off and just laying there. Garbage on floor in pool area. I was wary of breakfast, due to reviews we avoided the eggs. Waffle machine dispenser is broken so they have the mix in a coffee carafe that looks like it's never been washed. There's a huge ceiling leak just outside the breakfast area. Hallway 3rd floor ceilings are cracked. I'm guessing the roof is bad. Large door by elevator (maybe fire door?) has a broken handle. Hallways stink and are dirty, elevator too.

Room itself was ok, newer remodel. Rest of hotel was awful. Smelled like curry all the time. Hotel was hotter than outside. Ice machines broken, floors wet. Pool was unavailable for 2 days. Looked like a frog pond upon arrival. Breakfast was scant. Frozen eggs you had to cook yourself, very poor selection, poostocked. Trash and junk piled out back. Tv remote didn't work. Requested new, didnt work, staff was to change tv, didn't happen. No remote for entire stay.

This place for the price was nasty!!! The rooms had holes in the wall there were roaches in the bathroom. The room smelled. The carpet in the hallway looks like they haven’t been cleaned in years. They inflated the rate during Sturgis bike week and couldn’t even make the place look better. They have a shuttle to and from the airport but charge $100 because it’s bike week. If it wasn’t for the bike week that hotel would be shut down just like the other one behind it and the closed Dennys. I would not recommend anyone to stay there

On initial entry, found lotion already partially used sitting on sink and hair around toilet. Footprints ?? on headboard. TV remote didn't work. No back on remote, batteries taped in. Complained, given new remote, but I had to program it myself ???. Was told they would clean first thing in a.m. We were gone during day, on return, nothing had been cleaned, no new towels, nothing. Complained at desk, was given stack of towels, but they were not going to clean room still. Then found a hole in the tub, and I don't mean the drain. I have photos. Fiberglass tub is cracked in several places and split open on one side! They would do nothing about any of this. They DID say they would be willing to clean the room the next morning after we checked out. They were willing to clean AFTER we checked out! Makes me wonder if sheets were even changed, since they were going out of their way to clean AFTER we were leaving. Contacted Expedia. They called hotel, then called me back. Told me since hotel didn't want to do anything, there was nothing they could do. I was shocked that Expedia allowed all this, as it has to be a health violation at least. I have photos of this.When I asked for a copy of bill the night before so I would have receipt to discuss with Expedia, they accidentally gave me the sheet that shows they paid Expedia about $80 for their referral to their hotel. Makes it easier to understand why expedia didn't do anything. Obviously staying away from Econo Lodge chain!
