These events occurred throughout Europe but were particularly evident in Italy. In Tuscany the changes were relatively slow but very significant. Pisa, Lucca, Siena and Florence took advantage of the expansion of trade by conquering new territories and roads destroying many of the previous settlements and building new cities in their place. Lucca was particularly interested in dominating the Apennine passes and finding new outlets towards the sea; for this reason he turned his attention to Versilia and later to Garfagnana. Lucca was once settled in Camaiore where it destroyed the numerous castles of Versilia (Vallecchia, Corvaia, Brancagliano etc.) During the second half of the 13th century. the two cities of Pietrasanta (1255) and Camaiore were founded, giving Lucca the right to control the important Via Aurelia, which connected France to Southern Italy via the Via Francigena. Pietrasanta and Camaiore are very interesting examples of an urban project, with the same criteria: a right-angle plan with closed edges and four blocks enclosed by parallel longitudinal streets. The city was surrounded by a moat in which the walls would later be built. The two central blocks, larger than others, were crossed in half by a lane which helped to let air into the houses and cut down fires more easily. Today only a few traces of these lanes remain. It is recommended to travel by bike or on foot to enjoy every detail of this splendid city
