These events occurred throughout Europe but were particularly evident in Italy. In Tuscany the changes were relatively slow but very significant. Pisa, Lucca, Siena and Florence took advantage of the expansion of trade by conquering new territories and roads destroying many of the previous settlements and building new cities in their place. Lucca was particularly interested in dominating the Apennine passes and finding new outlets towards the sea; for this reason he turned his attention to Versilia and later to Garfagnana. The two central blocks, larger than others, were crossed in half by a lane which helped to let air into the houses and cut down fires more easily. Today only a few traces of these lanes remain.
