Stunning beaches that are romantic and peaceful. Beautiful rooms that are very comfortable--bordering on luxurious. Amazing amenities. You can book any activity you like on site. Small gift shop but the prices are comparable to Stone Town. Excellent service for drinks and food from pool or beach and amazing dinner service. The chef even prepared the dorado my husband caught for us to enjoy! A 5/5 except the staff don't communicate amongst themselves very well and breakfast service, particularly egg preparation, is painfully slow. Overall fabulous. An Indian Ocean holiday with with the beaches and amenities of Mauritius at a fraction of the price.

Disliked: Staff & service
We stayed one night at the hotel, and I got food poisoning after eating their lunch "chicken chappati wrap". I threw up all night, and the next day when we let the manager on duty know her response was that "she was sorry, but I must have gotten the bug from somewhere else since no one else had complained". I was completely fine before I ate that meal, and my husband who also had a bite felt sick (not as much as me since he consumed much less than me). It is a 5 star restaurant, I shouldn't have to worry about their food quality & it completely ruined my stay. It's been 3 days, and I am still not feeling completely fine yet.
We had a beachfront room - it was gorgeous . The extra touches were appreciated in the room, the service was excellent, friendly and we were made to feel at home- except better!!
The hotel is lovely and very relaxing and it's right next to the beach which has the most amazing aquamarine colour. For a hotel that's been there for around 20 years, it is very well kept and preserved, however they do need to move with the times and this can start by making sure the housekeeping staff are provided with trolleys so they don't have to carry baskets of dirty laundry on their heads in the baking heat and then make sure all pathways in the hotel are made wheel-friendly. Considering the big size of hotel grounds and the fact that they clean at least twice a day, it really is needed! Aside from that, staff are very lovely, obliging and happy (although sometimes their happy cheer seems forced - by management perhaps) and the location is excellent!
Magical setting - perfect for relaxing & unwinding
Like many people we ended our 9 day safari in Tanzania with 4 days at the Ras Nungwi Beach Resort. The bumpy road from the main road to the hotel had me concerned, but those concerns quickly vanished when we walked into the beautiful lobby area & could see the amazing turquoise waters of the Indian ocean from every angle. We stayed in an ocean front deluxe room - picture perfect with a small front porch directly facing the ocean. The room was immaculate and seemed like it had recently been renovated. The staff was very friendly - in particular, James in the restaurant who had an infectious laugh & Cornell who took care of us at the hotel's beach area. We didn't partake in any of the watersports activities since we just wanted to sit around and do nothing - but, there was plenty to choose from had I wanted to participate. Would highly recommend this hotel to anybody looking for a beach hotel in Nungwi that is away from the crowds. It felt like we were in our own little slice of paradise.
We stayed at Ras Nungwi in the Ocean Suite and it was absolutely amazing! The room has a private plunge pool and a private beach section. The hotel was extremely well maintained with amazing views. The one issue we had was that the hot water was broken in the Ocean Suite (it was working in all the other rooms at the hotel though); so after 2 hours of them trying to fix it we eventually were given a key to another room to take a shower there. That was not a huge deal- but would have been nice if management sent us a free pina colada or something to compensate for the inconvenience. Very nice restaurant with fresh and tasty food. Lots of activities at the resort as well. But honestly the room was so nice- we just stayed there the whole time. HIGHLY recommend.
We had a very relaxing and great time at Ras Nungwi. This is the perfect place for a couple that want to relax and enjoy a high standard hotel next to a beautiful beach! The hotel has very high standard and no complaints can be made on cleanliness and quality. The location is rather rural so don't expect to walk to restaurants/shops. Taxi service is available for a small amount and will take you to the more lively parts of Nungwi. The perfect combination of relax and fun!
The only draw back is the beach isn't as nice as other properties. During high tide there is no beach. I went to see about snorkeling 3 times and was told by staff and management that they couldn't not help me due to my schedule. I understand they want to sell the business themselves, but never leave the customer disappointed, At this point I wondered next door property to see if they offered snorkeling ,which the did everyday even cheaper. The prices of everything is also 5 star prices for example $4.50 us per beer next door $2.50. Would I stay here again, yes. Very clean, great food,
Here's the thing. Ras Nungwi is a great place to relax with private accommodations, as well as a great ocean view. There is also no locals on the beachfront that will bother you (most treat you as a walking wallet in Zanzibar). However, the beach itself is not as nice as the beaches in the main part of Nungwi (closer to the Z Hotel). The sand is not as rich and soft, and the water has quite a bit of coral. The downside though is the locals that will hassle you non-stop in the nicer beaches. So overall, a bit of a toss-up that will depend on the traveller.
Pros:
- Decent accommodations that are private and secluded.
- Extremely friendly staff. One of the bar managers taught us the East African game of bao!
- Mgmt addressed certain concerns we had and upgraded our accommodations, which we greatly appreciated.
- Decent food and reasonable prices. Drinks however, were not reasonably priced.
Cons:
- The airport transfer cost of US$80 (one-way) is egregious. I was able to arrange my own transfer with a local taxi to Stone Town for US$20. It is absolutely laughable that the hotel collects US$160 round-trip for an airport transfer, when you compare this to local prices
- What is also a joke is the USD to Tanzanian shilling exchange rate. Basically 20% worse than even an exchange in a tourist trap
- The walk to the main part of town takes more than the 15 minutes advertised. Closer to 45 minutes along the beach
- No Wi-Fi in the rooms (only in the common area)
- No TVs in the rooms.
Beautiful beach hotel/resort. Lovely and attentive staff. Very comfortable rooms and bathrooms. The staff takes an interest in arranging cultural tours, boat trips, and excursions. They offer bikes for local sightseeing and have games on site like tennis, darts, pool, etc. Very good food.

Zanzibar beach holiday.
It was good. However, the waves were too strong for a swim in the ocean.
I had 4 wonderful nights at this beautiful hotel. Here is what I enjoyed most:
- Beautiful location with lush gardens and just amazing views
- Cottages are beautiful and in very lovely setting.
- Very quite and peaceful hotel to truly enjoy and have relaxing and peaceful time.
- Service is impeccable and very friendly.
- Hotel grounds are very beautiful and well maintained.
Here are things that could help improve the experience there:
- Big draw back was no wifi in rooms (cottages)- only in bar/restaurant area
- Bathroom was small in cottages- though if you stay at garden view rooms which are in the back and don't have ocean view those apparently have bigger room and bathroom.
- Not much variety for breakfast - however dinners were great.
I could not imagine a better place to honeymoon. So beautiful.
So authentic, built into the environment. Their hammocks on the water are the most peaceful place I have ever relaxed. Staff is great. Food is 5 star!!!!! Could not recommend more highly!
We ended our trip to Tanzania in this hotel and were really looking forward to it! It has great facilities; a nice pool and attentive service, table tennis and tennis court. The rooms were clean and nice attention to detail to decorate the room with flowers and make our stay pleasant. However we were very surprised by the service and management. We were given a lovely welcome letter explaining that as we had booked B&B, we could extend to half or full board; and the different meal options, all including coffee or tea. Delighted with this we had dinner in the hotel on the first evening. The starter was one small piece of deep fried calamari on a lettuce leaf - a very small portion even for us as lovers of gourmet restaurants. The main course was better - nicely presented and a reasonable sized portion. At the end of the meal we were offered coffee. We were therefore surprised to receive a bill for the coffee - as the letter had specifically said it was included. When we challenged this, the front service ignored our questions. A day later they asked us to provide the letter as proof (clearly it had been printed by them!). And still no answer. At check out we were still charged with the coffee (which wasn't espresso or anything - just a regular coffee). Of course, it was not the cost, but the uncomfortable feeling. We ended up eating outside of the hotel - and having real espresso, huge platters of seafood and Tanzanian dishes - not the meager starter portions.
This place is amazing. not ver the top, just a perfect amount of comfort and class. beach concept is really cool and the rooms are very nice. Would recommend this to anyone for sure
Very comfy air conditioned rooms and beds. Staff was very friendly. Nice food. Rooms with beach view were awesome.
Medium sized pool but great beach, other hotels loose all the sand with the high tide but this one still had some sand. Hotel lends you water shoes to protect you from rocks and reef.
We ordered lunch at the beach. Octopus and Dorado cebiche was great!
Stayed at Ras Nungwi for 2 nights of our honeymoon vacation. The resort provided us with some complimentary gifts and arrangements, which were really heartwarming. Services, room condition and catering are all good. One thing is it's difficult to swim/sunbath at the beach as the tide is strong most of the time; but the scenary is good.
