Stop off south of the border in Morpeth, gateway to Northumberland’s UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Walk in the footsteps of Romans, Vikings and Christian saints, along the spectacular castle-strewn coast (past Harry Potter’s Hogwarts) and across the monumental length of Roman Hadrian’s wall, built 2000 years ago to defend the wild north-west frontier. This traditional Victorian house is in the historic market town of Morpeth and is the perfect starting point for couples or three people on Northumbrian adventures.
Drovers brought cattle to Morpeth market from as far away as the Scottish border for hundreds of years. Today, roads have replaced the drovers paths and there are houses where the cattle grazed, including this property, built in 1890 by the same family that still owns it. This welcoming and centrally located home has most of its original features as well as quality fixtures and fittings, a hi-spec kitchen, bathroom, downstairs cloakroom and free on road parking.
Within walking distance of Drovers, there are loads of good pubs and eateries. Direct trains from London to Edinburgh stop at Morpeth station, as well as trains to Newcastle, York and Durham, all easy day trips. The town is well served by banks, shops and supermarkets, and the streets and parks are always filled with flowers. You can visit Wednesday market, unwind at a pavement café in the pretty arcade, shop in bespoke boutiques or visit the craft gallery at the 13th-century chantry.
If you like history then Northumberland has it all, from prehistoric carvings on mystic Simonside Hill, to the Roman Wall, from earliest Christianity at Lindisfarne, to marauding Vikings and fearsome Border Reivers. All of these are within easy driving distance of Drovers. There is an outstanding coastline with Dunstanburgh and Bamburgh castles standing proud above magnificent golden sand dunes, while inland, Alnwick Castle’s 700-year-old charms make it a favoured movie location, familiar from films like Black Adder and Harry Potter.
You can hike the nearby Cheviots, walking the old drovers’ paths in search of shy red squirrels and otters, or take the ferry to the Farne Islands, busy with seals and puffins, both an easy day trip from Drovers. Visit the magnificent gardens of Northumberland’s handsome sandstone halls at Wallington and Cragside, or walk to work with coal miners at Woodhorn Colliery. Go salmon fishing on the Tweed, sail on Kielder Water, where you may glimpse a golden eagle, or play cliff top golf at Alnmouth overlooking the North Sea. All these build up an appetite for the wonderful seafood to be had from the daily catch in nearby working fishing villages, like Amble, Seahouses and of course Craster, famous for its smoked kippers. Beach 8½ miles. Shop 600 yards, pub and restaurant 350 yards.
Free WiFi
