The cabin

I designed and built the Monocoque Cabin with friends in 2023, inspired by the plywood monocoque construction of the WW2 De Havilland Mosquito. The same logic runs through it: curved ribs, stressed-skin plywood, and an interior where the structure is the finish. It was selected for the Airbnb OMG Fund from over 250,000 entries worldwide — a one-off you won't find anywhere else.

It sits on a working farm beside the Shropshire Union Canal, in over 0.2 acres of private, tree-lined garden near Tyrley Locks. Step outside and you're on the towpath. In summer, the narrowboats work the locks past your garden; watching them with a coffee in hand is the best of staying here.

Inside is a single open space. Ribbed timber walls, custom-built furniture, warm plywood throughout. Compact and considered — everything you need, nothing you don't. The layout flows from sleeping to living to cooking, and the curved polycarbonate windows frame the treeline and make the cabin feel far larger than its footprint.

The garden and canal

Peaceful and secluded, surrounded by mature trees, the loudest sound is usually a narrowboat ticking past in the morning. Generous for a cabin this size, with somewhere proper to sit out. The plot connects straight to the towpath — busy with boats in summer, still and quiet in winter. You're welcome to fish along the canal during your stay.

Dogs

Well-behaved dogs are welcome to run in the garden — clean up after them, please. One thing to know: the garden isn't fully enclosed, so a dog that needs a secure boundary may find it tricky.

Sleeping and comfort

A solid timber bed with quality linen, extra blankets, and proper pillows. Three electric heaters on Tapo smart plugs you control from your phone, plus a biofuel fire for the evenings (1 litre of fuel provided to start you off). The cabin is properly warm in winter, even when it's cold out. Eye masks provided for light sleepers.

Kitchen

Small but well-equipped: induction hob, air fryer, microwave, mini fridge, sink, and the basics to cook a decent meal — pots, pans, utensils, crockery, glasses, mugs, kettle. Tea, coffee, and a few essentials to get you started. Built for short stays rather than dinner parties, but you'd be surprised what you can put together.

Bathroom

An integrated compost toilet, ventilated by a powered extraction fan and completely odour-free. Simple instructions inside if you haven't used one before. Shampoo, body wash, hand soap, and clean towels all provided.

Wi-Fi and the small things

High-speed Wi-Fi, strong enough for streaming and staying in touch. USB and 3-pin sockets where you actually need them, board games, a puzzle, local guidebooks, and a quiet dehumidifier keeping the air fresh year-round.

Location

Market Drayton is a working market town with proper food shops, a weekly market, and pubs — 2 miles by road (4 minutes), or about 40 minutes on foot along the canal. The towpath walk is lovely in daylight but unlit, so best kept for dry weather and earlier in the day. Parking for one car directly at the cabin.

Good to know

This is a rural, off-grid-spirited cabin on a working farm. That's what makes it special, and it comes with a few honest things worth knowing up front.

During particularly dry summers, water pressure can occasionally drop. It usually returns within an hour or two — let me know if it happens, and I'll keep you posted. Winter evenings are properly cold outside; inside, the heaters and fire keep it warm, but pack a decent jumper if you want to sit out. The area is genuinely quiet, and public transport is limited, so a car is the best way to get here and explore.

A note on our cleaning fee

Our cleaning fee is higher than some listings because we pay our cleaner a fair, living wage. It shows the standard of the cabin when you arrive.
