The setting matches the ambition. Twenty acres on a mountaintop above Malibu, reached by switchbacks and a gate, with nothing above it but ridgeline. The Santa Monica Mountains fall away toward the Pacific and the Channel Islands appear on the horizon when the air is clear. Floor-to-ceiling glass carries all of it through the main living areas, and the great room takes the most — walls of glass, sunsets over the water, and a night sky far darker than the distance from Los Angeles would suggest.

Room for a group is built in. A chef's kitchen with an oversized island opens to dining for twelve, indoors or out. A private movie theater, a game room with a pool table, ping-pong and air hockey, a fitness room facing the mountains, and several quiet lounges for reading or a few hours of work.

Five bedrooms occupy the main house — four with king beds, one with a queen. A separate guest house adds a queen and two twins with its own full bathroom and private entrance, well suited to grandparents, a nanny, or anyone who would rather have their own door. Seven full bathrooms and a half bath keep the mornings unhurried.

Outside, the acreage does what acreage should. An infinity pool and spa sit above the canyon, with long tables nearby for lunches that stretch into the afternoon. An organic vegetable garden, an orchard of more than forty fruit trees, and private walking trails cover the rest, and children get a swing set, a playhouse, and open ground in every direction.

The seclusion is real, but so is the access. Malibu's beaches are a short drive down the canyon — Zuma, Nicholas Canyon, El Matador and Leo Carrillo among them. Some of Southern California's best hiking begins minutes from the gate, and surfing, horseback riding, boutique shopping and Malibu's restaurants are all within reach.
