Did the job (after a minor scare!)!
Booked a twin room with a friend to attend a wedding nearby. Although I booked the room some months earlier, when we arrived I was told that there was no record of the booking. Luckily there were spare rooms available, and the lady on reception sorted us a room and made enquiries with hotels.com. Appears to have been a mix up as the hotel has changed its name? Other than that minor bombshell after a 6 hour drive to the hotel, everything else was fine. Breakfast was good, parking available, didn't really spend much time at the hotel to be honest. Good base to explore local area.
Room had recently been refurbished so was clean and very comfortable. Most of the staff were helpful and friendly and breakfast was excellent. The only slight disappointment was dinner on our first night. There only seemed to be 3 red wines to choose from despite a wine list of at least a dozen, which was not a huge problem but when the bill came to £75 for one portion of nachos, 2 steaks and a bottle of wine, we did think it rather pricey for the what we actually got. The dining room has a stunning view but definitely more of a bistro feel than a 'good' restaurant and could really do with a bit of atmospheric lighting, soft furnishings or even some table cloths. The food was good although not fabulous and the wine was pleasant but the service was not particularly friendly on that occasion and for that kind of money we could have had a nice meal in one of the better restaurants in Glasgow. Having said all that we really couldn't fault anything else and we probably did choose the most expensive things on the menu although a smile from he waitress wouldn't have gone amiss. We would definitely stay there again but would only have breakfast or a snack in the restaurant.
I booked three rooms at this hotel for a family wedding and unfortunately all three rooms were filthy. We found hairs on the pillows and bedding in all the rooms, the carpets were dirty, the bathroom was dirty and the place looked like it had never seen a duster in its life. One of the rooms was so small that my 6ft tall father would be unable to close the bathroom door while he was using it, and there was nowhere to hang clothes.
Generally the hotel was shabby and unclean looking, which is evident from the second you step through the door. There was also a mattress and wardrobe blocking the top floor fire exit, which is completely unacceptable.
The lady on reception either didn’t want to hear our concerns or didn’t care and we communicated the issues about our rooms to a very rude housekeeper - he seemed to think hairs on apparently clean bedding was acceptable.
We refused to stay here and found alternative accommodation. We were in the area for a family wedding and other guests said their stay was ok, but not great. I’ve also heard from locals in the area that the hotel has a poor reputation so my advice would be to AVOID!
The room we were allocated was very small so we asked if it could be changed. The member of staff on reception was really helpful and showed us two other rooms to choose from and changed our room without a problem. It would be good if they had rooms with king sized beds as my husband is 6' 5", but the r9om we had was very comfortable.
Perfect stop over after long journey, before catching ferry to Islay next day.Beautiful location on edge of Loch Fyne. Had lovely meal in restaurant with fabulous views over the Loch. Apparently the hotel is under new management with refurbishment well underway. Some of public areas still awaiting attention, but our room was well presented- spacious, clean and bed very comfortable.Would definitely stay there again and plan a longer stay to explore the surrounding area.
Stayed in room 4 and had to sleep with my jacket on it was so cold, to add insult to injury i paid in advance through hotels.com then was charged again on checkout by the hotel, also the room had no wifi access very poor
The Hotel is well placed and the staff were very friendly and helpful The Breakfast was very good. We also had Lunch and Dinner both were very good and were reasonably priced.
We arrived at 10.15pm and had to wait for twenty minutes for someone to come a check us in our room was at the top in the attic. It had no wardrobe to hang our clothes in and only one cup in the room one towel and no glasses or plastic cups in toilet. Breakfast was good the room was tidy enough but hotel in general was very tired looking. Poor value for the money we spent.

Disliked: Property conditions & facilities
THE GREY GULL INN - "A WORK IN PROGRESS."
I UNDERSTAND THE HOTEL HAS FAIRLY RECENTLY CHANGED HANDS AND IS OBVIOUSLY STILL A 'WORK IN PROGRESS'. MOST DECOR IS IN NEED OF A MAJOR UPGRADE AND THE BAR COULD DO WITH SOME STOCK.( OUT OF DATE "SOUR" BOTTLED BEER/EMPTY BARRELS/FEW CHOICES)
VERY LIMITED CAR PARKING AVAILABLE AS PATRONS TRUCKS,VANS ETC. WERE AUGMENTING THE ALREADY FAIRLY FULL SPACES.
GOOD POINTS RELATE LARGELY TO THE STAFF WHO ALL TRIED THEIR ABSOLUTE BEST WITH THE VERY LIMITED RESOURCES AVAILABLE - OFFICE AND RESTAURANT, AND THE LOCATION WHICH IS LARGELY FACING THE SEA AND ABSOLUTELY STUNNING ON A NICE DAY .
